Lifetime Average Wh/mi

After a memorable almost-1,300 mile roadtrip filled with 80-90 mph runs between superchargers on I-5 and a spirited 420 Wh/mile run through the Grapevine (my god, this car can pull like a freight train up an incline without breaking a sweat!!), crossed 17k miles. My lifetime average ticked up from 314 to 315 Wh/mile again:

December was my worse month in over a year of ownership. Still not 100% sure what made it so terrible, it was a little colder than last winter, but not so much so as to account for the dramatic decrease in efficiency I'm seeing here. The car went to St.Louis Service and had a new alignment and wheel balance, tire pressures were at 45psi all around and no change in driving style... In fact, I was probably much more conservative than last December b/c I'd just gotten the car and was really enjoying the power/torque/speed and spent a lot of time showing it off to friends and family. Lifetime dropped from 309 Wh/mi to 314 Wh/mi in one month despite having over 23,000 miles on the vehicle! Very frustrating.

Evan, I'll bet it's power used by the resistance heater. When my resistance heater is on, my wh/mi goes up 50 to 100 easily. And you can't tell when it's on, unless, UNLESS you're watching the wh/mi very closely.

I turn the thermostat to "LO", turn the fan to "1" outside air to the windshield to keep fog off. I drive when it's sunny for infrared heat (thank you CA). My Wh/mi are sitting at 308. If I have the temp on (let's say 68), I immediately start using battery by the ton. The car starts heating the outside air and pumping the warm car air to the outside.

I drive with blankets and gloves at times. Don't expect everyone to do that, but the alternative is to use battery powered resistance heating.

Here's my update... Dec alone was 10 Wh/mi higher than Nov -- we had a cold spell in AZ in early December -- temps near freezing in the mornings for over a week.

Lifetime:
ZBB 298 9,423.0 AZ 60 19 1 12/31/13

December Only:

Evan, I'll bet it's power used by the resistance heater.

Not sure. That's a large increase for a guy that is very familiar with his numbers. My consumption average increased in December but was clearly due to cold ambient temps, heat use, and a particularly "spirited" drive to the grocery store and back by my beautiful, brilliant (but lead footed) wife documented here. I think Evan would have had to seriously alter his driving style to see that kind of increase with all other factors being normal. It really seems to me that there's something else going on. But what?

Model S 60 with 19" Tires after 7 months of ownership - update lifetime is now at 321 wh/mi, and climbing

November and December have been terrible due to the cold and use of winter tires.

Nice graph, but seriously - do not get upset or disappointed. This is totally known and expected behavior. Typical summer averages ~300 whammy, winter averages ~400 whammy. Factor it in as you calc range!

I suspect we'll see a lot of this from people who took delivery spring/summer/fall 2013. For those of us who took delivery last winter, there was initial disappointment that we didn't get expected range, but then elation in summer when we realized the difference.

Looking at these data...
...I think Mario Kadastik's real name is Mario Andretti..... ;)

Hahaha, I was providing the first 250 miles data :D Which included tons of demos to people and only short distance driving in winter :D Here's an update for December (which happens to be lifetime)

December 2013
1634km (1015 miles)
total kWh: 403,5kWh
Average: 247Wh/km (397Wh/mile)

It's still highish, but it's coming down. The last 500 or so km have been mostly ~200Wh/km as they included some longer distance driving and it's not that hard to average < 200Wh/km on the road if you go for 50+km so that the car is nice and comfy warm and all limiters are gone.

I was lazy and am posting this a couple of days late. As before, trip A is everything except the 21 miles at delivery; I reset trip B last month so I can do monthly numbers. This is all on 4.x, BTW.

ONE-MONTH:
kendallpb 01-03-2014 371 1,864.3 MD S85 19" (Dec.)

LIFETIME:
kendallpb 11-09-2013 325 11,699* MD S85 19"
kendallpb 12-01-2013 328 12,596 MD S85 19"
kendallpb 01-03-2014 333 14,460 MD S85 19"

Going up! Well, weather's worse, plus trips; we went out of town for 5 days (5+ hours each way, Supercharging, atypical driving). Then I was out of town without the car for 5 days. ;-(

Supercharging is great, but my range doesn't impress me (nowhere near 265 when I let it finish, on the road trip). I should search out the latest recommendations for battery balancing and do another range charge, to see how much I really get.... Too lazy right now. ;-)

Party on and Happy New Year, folks!
