Lighted rear applique with special effects and Bluetooth smart phone controller: Early Adopter Price
More than a year in the making, the idea to light the TESLA letters in the rear chrome applique began with a request in December 2013 by TMC member Aaron Schildkraut (aaron) to Rick Hesel (artsci) and evolved based on many suggestions by TMC members. A key development was the involvement of Danal Estes (danal) who suggest the use of neopixels to light the TESLA letters and subsequently developed and programmed a neopixel module and Bluetooth smartphone application to control the lighting and apply a number of special effects. Critical advice was provided by a number of other TMC members, including SUPRKAR (Bill Polera. This is truly a team effort by the Tesla Model S community and would not have been possible without the support of Tesla Motors Club. Accordingly TMC will receive a commission on all sales of the lighted applique.
The applique will consist of an OEM Tesla rear applique with the TESLA letters cut out by water jet, custom made 3D printed letters glued into the cut out letter spaces, a waterproofed neopixel module glued onto the back of the letters, and a Bluetooth control module.
The lighted applique will be shipped ready to install. Basic installation steps include:
- Removal of the stock applique and supporting bracket (base)
- Some simple cutting of the supporting bracket (base)
- Removal of the liftgate trim panels to access the wiring connections for the rear running lights, brake lights, and reverse lights
- Threading of several wires through the flex conduit from the top of the liftgate to the roof of the car
- Removal of the right rear trunk trim panel to access the connections for always-on 12v power and rear turn signals.
The installation is appropriate for an advanced do-it-yourselfer and any capable after-market auto accessory shop. Illustrated written installation instructions and an installation video will be provided to each buyer.
Optional special effects for lighting the applique TESLA letters will include the following. Instructions on the deployment of each option will be provided in the installation instructions.
- Steady state red when the rear running lights are on
- Brighter red when the brakes are applied
- Flashing brighter red when the brakes are applied
- Sequential lighting of each letter in sync with the right and left turn signals
- Sequential lighting to spell ? TESLA S?
- Sequential lighting of the letters in white when the car is place in reverse, with a number of other effects
- Other special effect options will also be available
Orders are now being taken for the Model S Lighted Rear Applique. We are offering an early adopter price of $695. Following the first 39 orders or 45 days, whichever comes first, the price will increase to $795.00. Both prices include a core charge of $130 for the old applique. If it's returned in as-new condition (our judgment about whether it's reusable), you'll receive a credit for $130. A new applique is $150. The core credit is lower because new double sided tape has to be affixed to returned appliqu?s so they can be reused and that involves expense and not inconsiderable hand work.
If your stock applique is returned in as new condition so it can be reused you will receive a rebate of the value of a new applique less shipping charges and the cost of replacement double sided tape, about $130.00. If you keep your stock applique the core charge credit will not apply. Determination of the suitability of returned appliques for the core credit will be the exclusive right of the seller.
