Long weekend away from charger?

While I still drive a ICE car I’m getting more in the mindset of driving a EV. My MYLR should arrive by January and I live in AZ. Details follow TLDR at end

This weekend me and the wife gotta babysitter and we were out for the weekend. Friday night to Sunday morning. We traveled about a total of 12mi (20min) to the hotel. After a hour of deciding what to eat. (Indecisive wife) Took a 4 mile (20 min including waiting for food) round trip to the restaurant and back to the room. Car sat overnight From 10p to 8a. We took a trip to go get breakfast about 24mi (1 hour with wait) round trip. Car sat from 9a to 5p. Til when we headed out to dinner about 13mi (20min) to the restaurant. Car sat for about 2 hours. Then we headed to the casino about 22mi (25min) and car sat for another 90min. (Casino did have some chargers but likely just level 2 tops) Then we headed back to the hotel about 2 miles (5 min away) Car sat overnight 10p to 10a when we headed home another 12 miles. Got home at 1030a. Total of about 90mi over the course of the weekend.

This seemed like a typical weekend me and the wife might do when we can get away. Does This seem possible to do without charging? With sentry mode and AC on while driving moderately. 70-80mph on highway and 40mph city.

TLDR: weekend getaway with the wife without a charger. Drove a total of about 90mi over the course of 2 nights highway and city. Would this be possible to do comfortably with sentry mode on over night and AC on while driving moderately. How long do you guys stay away from a charger if you have to?

Charge to 90% before you leave and you should good for the weekend. Bring the SAE J1772 charging adapter that comes with the Tesla vehicle. This small adapter enables you to can plug in, charge at any convenient Level 2 charging station (always keep an eye out for the public charging stations that are free to use while you are shopping, dining, etc.) An hour of charging at one of these (typically 200V/30A, 6kW) is good for adding 8% charge to the battery capacity (~22 miles of driving range added to the battery.) Use PlugShare to locate public charging stations. Resorts and Casinos will probably have some available.

If you take a side trip the Tesla Navigation system can guide you to a Supercharger. Also, download A Better Route Planner (ABRP) to your phone (also available on the web) and use ABRP to plan charging stops on a trip.)

Sentry mode will use between 1-2 miles an hour of charge, so 24 to 48 miles of range. Worse case scenario would be your 90 miles + 96 miles of sentry mode + another 20-30 miles used because you are driving 70-80 MPH, so yes you should be fine doing this but you are not going to have 200 miles left or something.

Alternatively, dont use sentry mode and dont worry in the slightest because you wont come close to using your range up (yes, sentry mode uses that much.... its going to be somewhere between 20 and 48 miles lost per 24 hours just for sentry mode).

As others mentioned, don't worry about it but to always be prepared take a look at the Tesla supercharger / destination charger map or plugshare to confirm there's charging there if you really need it.

We've been far away from chargers for whole weekends (camping, visiting friends, ..) using our MY and as long as you start with a full charge and don't do things like leave Sentry mode on.. you will 99% of the time be fine.. without any charging needed. And for that random time you need it have J1772, 5-15 or buy 5-20 pigtail adapter with mobile connector, or Tesla chargers ready. Destination charging is key, and you'll get use to doing it.

The one thing new drivers worry about most is "how much charge will it take... will I have... will I need". The car has 300 miles of range! And you won't be anywhere near to using it, so why is everyone worried about looking for a charger? You won't need one. I don't ever use Sentry Mode, but rather check on the car by phone, and of course, the car will contact me if anyone tries to break in.

What did you worry about with your gas car? Relax and get some sleep.

Wow I’m seeing mixed numbers with this. So say 1-2% over night some say 5-10% over night. Will be interesting to see how this effects me. I’m looking forward to sentry mode whenever I’m parked outdoors overnight. Which is rare. I have a garage at home.

Your likely right. And as you said I’m new so of course I’m probably overthinking. However Like I said I’m just starting to get in the mindset of driving a EV seriously. With everyone saying charge charge charge I’m wondering how much loss I’ll have with sentry overnight and not charging at all for a weekend of mixed driving with AC in 100% of the time. Some mixed sentry mode losses reported or mixed range dropped with liberated driving reported also had me thinking after a weekend with the wife away from home/charger.

Anytime the Tesla Model Y is powered on, parked not moving with no HVAC running it is drawing ~230W. (When the Tesla Model Y is asleep the power draw is ~25W.) Sentry Mode causes the Tesla Model Y to stay awake, i.e. you will use almost ~1kWh of battery charge every 4 hours; 12 hours = 3kWh; Assuming 280Wh/mi (not unusual consumption for highway driving) that is ~3.5 miles per kWh. You would lose roughly 3 X 3.5 miles or ~11 miles of range if parked for 12 hours. Not much but it adds up quickly if parked for several days, i.e. when parked at an airport. Over a weekend you could lose 25+ miles of range or a ~10% of your range if you estimated range is 300 miles and you charge to 90%. That 25 miles could make the difference between making the drive home without stopping (especially in bad weather. Water on the road surface will increase consumption by 20Wh or even 30Wh per mile.)

1-2% overnight is without sentry mode. Every time you use sentry mode, you can expect to use roughly 1-2 miles of range per hour. Usually closer to 1, but if you also have things like cabin overheat protection on, will be closer to 2. It will be 20 miles of range minimum every 24 hours, as I said. Do NOT plan on "1-2%" with sentry mode on the entire time, it wont happen.
