Going through your own insurance company is the best course of action as they SHOULD fight for you and your rates will not go up. If you are unhappy with how they handle this situation, tell them and let them make it right, or find a new insurance company. Over the 26 years I’ve had insurance through progressive, I’ve had to use them to go after the at-fault party a few times, and always with great results. I’ll never switch insurance companies due to this history, regardless of cheaper rates or not.
