Low driving range on 2021 Y standars

We just got our 2021 model y standard about 5 days ago. We got it used with 18,000km.
We’re finding that the driving range is extremely low. We charged to 90% and roughly 56km since that, it’s already down to 74%.
Yesterday I went on the 401 (100-120km/hr) for the first time with it, 126km trip drained the battery from 90% to 39%. It dropped so rapidly after that, we couldn’t even have driven another 25km.
Should we be worried about this? We’ve turned off sentry and cabin overheat protection. Could it be from it sitting on a lot for awhile?

Hi Amylynn,

126 km from 51% of the pack seems to be pretty on point if your Model Y is indeed the standard range version with the smaller battery pack and rear wheel drive. The EPA advertised range is very optimistic and only achievable in warm weather with no wind at less than freeway speeds.

If you find yourself using more energy than expected, your best option is to slow down. Slowing down by 10 or 20 km/h makes a big difference.

Keep in mind that going up hill consumes a lot of energy, but you’ll get some of that back coming down the other side. Using the built-in trip planner (navigating to your destination) will help you anticipate how much energy you’ll use and will provide suggestions if it thinks your need to slow down in order to make it. Also check out the energy app, which looks like a little green bar graph icon. When navigating to a destination, it will provide an estimate of what to expect, including elevation changes.

Check your tire pressure (when cold), set to 42 PSI or several pounds over. Winter tires increase energy consumption (higher Wh/km)

Always precondition the Tesla Model Y to warm the battery and the passenger cabin while still plugged in. You do this by turning on the Climate Control via the Tesla phone app to your preferred temperature setting. Tap the windshield defrost icon on the Climate Control screen two times (it will turn red) for maximum windshield defrosting if needed. Depending on the outside temperature or the garage temperature precondition while plugged in for 10 to 15 minutes or longer before departing. Turn on the Recirculate Cabin Air setting as you drive. (The heat pump can heat and automatically dehumidify the cabin air simultaneously.)

Reduce highway speed by 15 Km/hr to extend your range, increase your efficiency by almost 10%. Reducing highway speed by 30 Km/hr will increase range and efficiency by almost 20%.

Dress warmly, use the heated seats and steering wheel (these use very little power) instead of running the climate control at a high temperature setting. Set Climate Control to Auto and set cabin temperature to ~21C. You can also turn on the heated seats, steering wheel heater while preconditioning. With the latest software you can set the front seat heaters to Auto so they will always turn on as needed.

For road trips of over ~100Km charge to 100% before starting out. Set your destination using the Tesla Navigation System. Use the Energy screen to monitor your consumption while driving to the destination. By monitoring your consumption you can adjust your speed or divert to a Supercharger as needed.

The Standard Range Model Y charges more slowly than the Long Range Model Y or Performance Model Y due to the smaller capacity of the battery. When charging using Level 2 the Standard Range Model Y is capable of a maximum of 32A versus 48A for the Long Range Model Y and Performance Model Y. The maximum charging rate in the Standard Range Model Y is also somewhat lower when using a Supercharger. Always set the desired Supercharger as the Destination in the Tesla Navigation System. The Model Y will prewarm the battery while driving to the Supercharger for the fastest, most efficient charging.
