I was wondering that too. Theoretically anyone could fly to any state to buy a car and drive it home. But California now requires temporary plates until permanent ones arrive. And I’m pretty sure all states require registration at point of sale.

Does California have a grace period for cars purchased out of state? Maybe Tesla can generate car registrations for any state.
Perhaps Tesla can set up California registration from another state. It’s probably tricky. California is pretty rough about things being just so. Also, getting proper insurance is a must.

I’ve purchased cars in Europe, driven them on foreign registrations, and then had them shipped and registered here. The best I’ve ever understood is that you cannot drive that car one inch without registration and insurance. Now you can buy a car in Oregon, register it there, drive it to California and re-register it here.

What does the Portland rep say? Registering it twice may cost a few extra $, but if you can avoid the double taxation (sales), then that’s the big expenditure. Does Oregon even have a sales tax? I though they didn’t but they taxed you to death on everything else.

Cal. temporary plates are for Cal. only. They are no different than the window sticker we had about a year ago. The temp plates are an easy way for bridge toll cameras and red light cameras to nail you. It was long overdue.

I think the registration is based on the information you provide prior to delivery anyways. With the picture of your Drivers License etc. I will check with SA today.

Car is officially assigned to me. I am a little annoyed that they made me rerun the credit app that was good from my custom order even though no vin was assigned. I feel like the cars are both new and virtually same price and no vin was attached to original application that was run 3 weeks ago so we should have been good to go but that was not the case.

As far as coming down highway 1...the route is in the air and that would be the ideal route because its amazing but also doubles the drive time. I might take my 7 year old son with me and ditch a day of work school and make it a little 3 day journey for us. It is all in the air now but I will update you guys as I get information.

Something that might be of interest for everyone is that there is no doubt that the vehicle is assigned to me and the SA provided me with the VIN HOWEVER the vin does not appear on my page or source code. Not sure if the source code stuff still works.

Well that would be special with your kid. It's something both of you would remember forever.

You could split between I5 and US101 (Oregon) and/or CA 1 (California). There are several spots where you can cut over if you want to speed up/slow down. Both are better this time of year - avoid them in summer or you'll be stuck by RVs that -won't- pull over. Weather is a factor too.

How did the delivery go?
Well, the passenger side front wheel had curb rash and there was a scrape on the underside of the bumper. Pictures look worse than in real life as they are close ups. The delivery driver documented the issues and we signed his document. After all, I had already purchased the car, what was I going to do...The driver was completely random and not associated with Tesla. My Manage page said my delivery appointment was at 10:30am. The driver didn’t call until 2:50pm and he was at my house. I of course was still at work. He unloaded the car nearby, drove it to my house, and waited for me. The car was loaded on a flat bed with a 90’s model dodge truck. The driver referenced how he had difficulty loading the car and that the car gave him warnings when he attempted to use both the accelerator and the brake at the same time while loading the car. Not that it matters, but I suspect the driver may have been the culprit of the curb rash and scraped bumper. The car also came with an older software version. I was prompted to update right away, but even after updating, I’m still not on V10 much less the new power/range version. I called my delivery specialist right away, he requested emailed photos and ensured me that the issues would be resolved either via ranger or Car Crafters (ugh). To his credit, my delivery specialist has been the most responsive and available individual in my dealings with Tesla. Hopefully he follows through on his promises.

After the lack of communication, longer than communicated delivery times, and generally unapologetic nature of Tesla, I was really expecting a perfect car. None of the issues are huge, but in the context of the ordering/delivery experience they are disappointing.

All that being said, I am very happy with the car. No QC issues as far as I am concerned. I wanted to get PPF for the front end right away, but I suppose I will have to wait to get the scrape fixed.

That's unfortunate. It seems that Tesla really doesn't want to do carrier deliveries. I know when I first proposed it the guy in LV was pretty discouraging. I'm still going to do it if the car isn't available before Thanksgiving (don't want to gamble on Raton pass). On the communication front it seems that Tesla has assumed the old AT&T motto "We don't care cause we don't have to".

Buying out of state is no big deal. When you pick up, you get a 48 hour "drive out" registration that says you are exempt from sales tax because you are leaving immediately and will register in another state. You go to the DMV in your new state, pay TTTLR, and pick up your plate. Happens all the time and dealers know how to handle it.

One more interesting piece of information
How do you trade your car in if you buy out if state? Can you?

It is challenging especially if trading in directly to Tesla. They dont seem to be all that willing to accept a trade in at one location prior to delivery at another location. Something to do with the way the paperwork is done.

Once I know delivery is set I will trade in with Carmax and just keep Tesla out of the trade in process.

Delivery in Chicago on 11/1 went great for the White/White AWD I ordered on Oct 4. I'd submitted payment electronically so was just a few signature, walk through of the car and I was on my way in around 30 min. Nice to not have a lot of the pressure like other car dealers to get a bunch of add-ons. The SA even hugged me and offered to take my photo with the car!

Oddly it didn't have the latest software update so still on V9. You'd think when a car was made over a month after an update comes out it would have the latest software installed. Last night it said it did an update but it's still on version 9. Only other thing I noticed so far is that there was a small pucker in the back seat - nothing real noticeable and since getting it fixed is likely a real pain I'll just overlook it.

Have to say it's worth the wait! It's the most amazing car I've ever driven - responsive, well designed, safe and just plain fun to drive!
