I go skiing every weekend during winter (Southern California).

My understanding is that I need to get winter tires and need to change tires much more frequently for the performance model.

Should I choose the long range model?

If you want the extra power, higher top speed, ultimate Model Y handling then get the Performance Model Y. If you want to take delivery by December '21 then the Performance is your only option. If you don't mind waiting, perhaps until next September then you might be satisfied with the Long Range Model Y. You can swap the performance tires for all-season tires. You can also switch wheels and use 19" or 20" wheels (more tire choices) than with the OE 21" wheels.

The Long Range Model Y's ground clearance is 6.6 inches. The difference in ground clearance is less than 1/2 inch. According to some, the Performance Model Y is lower by 1.1cm (I've searched but it is hard to ferret out this spec.)
