M3 Trunk Lid Replacement

Backed into my Jeep this morning because I’m a ding dong :(. I mainly want to share my initial experience with the service center (collision repair specifically). I scheduled an appointment in the app at around 8:30am for next week. By 9:45am, I received communication that Tesla virtual service is looking into the request. By 10:00am, I received another text and an email with repair quote (I’m assuming derived for the photos I attached through the app). Everything is signed and rolling by mid afternoon and car is scheduled to come in for the repair next week, and the repair is estimated to take 5 days. Pretty happy with the Marietta, GA service center.

Car has trunk damage, broken driver tail light, and trunk slightly misaligned. No damage to rear quarters, bumper or the panels on either side of the rear window. Tesla quoted $2600 to repair with new unfinished trunk assembly, new tail light, and professional paint and blending to the rear quarters and roof side panels. Majority of this cost is the body shop paint work, which I’m fine with as long as the blend job is good.

Car is the multicoat white, and Tesla actually mentioned that their previous approach was to replace with a factory painted trunk, but they’ve found the paint match is a crapshoot (I believe it especially with pearl white), so the new approach at this service center is to paint new part and blend.

Will update thread as the repair happens and end result. Photos of damage attached. I repaired the Jeep myself by scrubbing off the marks left on the rear spare tire and carrier...never parking that stupid thing behind the M3s garage stall ever again!

Don't feel too bad, my wife liked playing demolition derby in the driveway in her Subaru. After the 3rd collision with guests' cars, I said it would be cheaper to trade in for a newer model with a backup camera.

Glad to hear the Marietta SC is working out for you. I have been unhappy with the Alpharetta SC. Seems like they are just not organized there, paperwork gets lost. And it's not a big deal, but the customer area is always dirty. Other dealers seem to stay on top of things better.

Well, the backup camera doesn’t help when you close it and mess around with the music while backing up...lesson learned.

That sucks regarding Alpharetta. I picked up my car at the Alpharetta location, but I haven’t been back since the Marietta location is closer to my house and on the way home from work.

Alpharetta location definitely is newer looking and in a nicer building, but the Marietta location is always clean and organized. This is my 2nd time there, and I’ve been happy with service.

It definitely ruined the day, but just have to move on. I guess this sort of cancels out the tax credit lol.

I kind of got lucky that it hit the spare tire of the Jeep. Could have been a lot worse if there was bumper and rear quarter damage.

FWIW I had my rear bumper repaired and repainted at a Tesla approved shop 16 months ago and they matched the paint perfectly. IMO it’s more about the blending and skill of the painter. They should definitely spray a let-down panel for the best match on any multi-coat finish.
