Maintaining a dark paint job

As an aside, I have something against white cars, I had one in 86, but then they went completely out of fashion in the UK, so I'm not sure I could buy another one, despite the obvious practicalities of appearing cleaner, and being cooler.

MikeK, I empathize with how hard your decision is and commend you for putting it out there for feedback. Many times a sounding board from others or just writing your thoughts out clearly helps. I hope this thread serves its purpose for you. Here are my two cents after reading through this thread and your other posts about color:

On Model S you seem to like the aesthetics of the blue better than the white. Blue is prettier to you but not slam dunk prettier or you wouldn't have this decision. However, you recognize that the maintenance of the blue will be significantly more than the white if you want to keep it looking sharp most of the time. Tesla's blue is actually a chameleon--blue (sun) and black (shade and at night), which makes it extremely interesting but also means it's much more like a black car in showing dirt, swirls, etc, than a typical dark blue car. If you make the effort to keep the blue Model S clean most all the time you will likely always find it a bit more attractive than the white. However, if you don't keep up with it all the time, on average it is not going to look as good to you as the white since they are not that far apart aesthetically to you when both are in top buffed condition.

Model S white is an absolute knockout. The contrasts of the black nose cone, black pano glass, black lower rear bumper and chrome door handles create a remarkable effect. It is nothing like other white cars. It is a white Model S, a unicorn among white cars, extra-ordinary. You would be getting an aesthetically exceptional car in white. The blue is prettier to your eye when they both have their best dresses on (fully cleaned and buffed), but that doesn't mean if you decided on the white that you wouldn't have a drop dead gorgeous car.

From an outside observer's standpoint, your decision appears to pivot on how much weight you give the aesthetic advantage of the blue to your eye compared to the weight you give the maintenance advantage of the white which is no slacker in the aesthetics department itself. As others have said, you cannot possibly go wrong.

How would the dolphin grey paint hold up? I currently have a white car and love it. When it gets dirty I take it to the touchless carwash, no worrying about swirl marks, dust/pollen etc. Is the grey more like a dark colour that shows every little imperfection and requires meticulous care? Or is it more like white/silver which are less hassle?

Dealers make a huge mark up on a lot of the BS paint protection (not the paint armor, but the various liquids that are applied for an 'invisible coat'). At least in the UK they all used to do the hard sell on something that was charged at over $1000, but in reality was a kit that cost $60 and required no skill to apply (and it tended to flake or yellow after a year or so).

Now, I have chosen the Paint Armour (really), but only after this careful discussion with my Tesla Specialist:

I tend to like the darker colors over white (personal preference), but my last two cars were black and as other have said, they look great when they're clean and polished, but show every speck of dirt and water spot not to mention scratches and swirls over time.

I was "sold" on the Grey until I drove a Blue one at the Get Amped event and really, really liked that color. Actually Sig Red is my favorite, but won't be getting a Sig so that's not an option. I do worry about the dark color issues with the Blue and, as such, remain torn on color selection.

At the end of the day, it's a personal decision, but I can attest to the fact that Black (and dark colors in general) do show dirt and wear more than lighter colors.

+1 for Zaino. My previous black Impala SS is large like the MS and Zaino made keeping it looking good easy. We had an auto detailer that serviced cars at the office and was impressed whenever I did the simple upkeep. I clayed and 'waxed' it once a year which would take a few hours and used the Zaino wash every weekend which takes as long as a regular car wash. Super simple. A few other tips, use a synthetic chamois as they work better than the natural ones. On the flip side natural sponges are better than artificial ones. Home Depot carried nice large ones years ago. Not sure if they still do. Water blades are helpful too in quickly drying the car.

Though it's been 7 years since I've had a nice car to upkeep so this info may be out of date and there may be even better info out there.

But you're going blue nonetheless? Do you just accept that it won't look its best most of the time, or do you have a strategy for keeping it looking nice?

Well... I'm still torn, but really liked the blue when I saw and drove it at the Get Amped event. My last two cars were black, and even though I knew how much trouble it was keeping my first black car clean, I still couldn't resist when I bought my current car!

I think some cars look good in white, but the the white Model S just didn't do it for me.

I do try and carefully hand wash my cars, and polish/wax twice a year. In the Canadian winter months, I am relegated to the car wash, but only use the "touchless" kind.

My absolute favorite color on Model S is the Sig Red, but I won't be getting a Sig, so that's off the list. It's between the Grey and Blue right now. One other thing that's swaying me towards the Blue is that it seems to be somewhat unique in my neck of the woods. It seems every other car on the road here is either Silver or Grey.

I had a black BMW 740IL and I never really found it that hard to keep clean.
I'm going with the Blue for my new MSP.

Me too. And ever since I sent it in I'm eying every blue car I see. So, I saw the blue Roadster but not the Blue Model S. Ordering based on MikeK's wrap-around videos and pictures. Which is a little crazy but no Blue Model S near Mass to see. Opinions: it is lighter than Audi Midnight Blue? BMW midnight Blue? AMC Gremlin Powder Puff Blue? Any comparisons and comments on whether it looks darker/lighter than MikeK's pics/videos (which are spectacular and easily found with a Forum search for pacific blue)? Thanks
