Major 2021 Model X refresh pending [Update: Unveiled January 27, 2021]

U.K. order end of oct 2020. Just offered the new model at a 2k discount. Still works out at 8k more than the previous model. All set to get my car in a month or two only to be told it’s 8k more and you’ll have to wait another year! Wait or go elsewhere? Decisions decisions

I've been scratching my head for a while, and taking into account everything (price, interior, exterior, charging, unreliable delivery timelines, ...) I have to say that the Model Y is beginning to look more fitting than ever. Upgrade it to Plaid+ or Cybertruck (or another manufacturer) later when they have gotten the production up to usual speed at competitive price.

I'd want them to put in the 180 kWh pack that the truck is getting, though.

I really want the R1S with the 180kWh battery, but... the charging network is keeping me away. I make about 10-15 trips per year that require 1, 2 or 3 Supercharging stops per trip(family house in WI / family in OH). I do not trust the EA charging network and therefore until Rivian and the EA network proves itself, I can't move away from the Model X. I'm in the window of upgrading my 2016 X, but this new refresh doesn't do it for me. I was really hoping for 400+ range to force me to upgrade, but I still would have to stop on my most common trip up to WI.

By the time the R1S comes out (late 2021) the EA network will have hundreds more stalls across the country. It's really expanding at a fast pace. If you haven't checked out their network recently I would recommend you do so. Just at a quick glance there are plenty of DC fast chargers in both OH and WI, with the exception of far northern WI (Tesla doesn't have chargers there either). There are a couple in Duluth and Moose Lake, MN if you were up there and desperate for a charge though.

Currently my long family trip is MA to VA and back...but in a few months, we're moving to Maine, which adds three hours and presumably one more charging stop to the trek.

the Electrify America network can get me to my in-laws, the only issue now is that there is no local non-Tesla fast-charging solution in the area. (they just got a Supercharger this past June).

Assuming you're moving to the Augusta/Bangor area (based on the 3hr comment) I see 8 CCS fast chargers between Bangor and New Hampshire on I-95. Most of those are 50-100kW but there's a 350kW charger in Portland and one in Seabrook, NH.

I'll be in the Western Foothills between the casino and Sunday River. If I could get an R1S with the larger pack, ostensibly I wouldn't need to charge until CT, and I could charge in Scarborough on the way home.

It's the local fast-charging in VA that is currently the hold-up. But there IS a Walmart in Farmville, VA. They've also added some slow ChagePoints.

Just need EA to plop a few in by the Walmart, and I'd consider making the jump. I like the R1S in green, and I'm kinda disappointed Tesla isn't adding any new colors.

There were images on Tesla's site last night showing both the X and S with a regular steering wheel (ST03 vs. ST0Y). Looks like the links aren't working today.

I hope to god they do not ditch the vertical screen and the dash displays on the X.....not a fan of the small square screen.

If Tesla has the option for steering wheel I will keep my order. Its hard for me to fathom yoke, coupled with absence of stalks, being functional or ergonomic for non-autonomous drive.

Lots NOT to like here.

-Loss 11 miles, WTF (like 'Plane, Trains and Automobile' scene, 'You're going the wrong way"
-That STEERING 'Wheel' REALY! WFT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- $10,000 price increase (again with Rivian coming and having the $7500 FTC, going the wrong way)
-Loss of all stalks so HAVE to spend more time with eye off road to use the screen and do simple things (wipers speed, enable cruise, adjust speed,
-Relearn how to turn on turn signals with button push, WTF.
-But hey the 'wheel' is so bad, we are distracted from the Horizontal screen as that is minor compared to the rest of this.

At least the 'wheel' can be fixed by an after market bolt on top 1/2. Shouldn't take too long and attach from back side, could be done right.

The range and loss of stalks, not good. Stock down, so market not thinking so either?

P.S. Do like active active noise cancel and new sound system. Stereo in test drive 2021 was not that good sounding. OK at best, missing real bass and clarity.

Coming from 2018 P3D to a 2020 X, the stereo was quite a disappointment. Still better than most other cars I've ever owned, but I felt for the $, it should be better than the 3's.

Cool that they've fixed THAT, but the rest is pretty underwhelming.

Based on the website, new/ (Can we call it Life Cycle Impulse like they do in BMW world?) LCI X is about 250lb lighter than the old one, even with a bigger rear motor. Suggests they took a lot of cells out and still found some efficiency in the new packs/power electronics/rear motor might now be switched reluctance? Interesting, they basically held the line on range despite the power increase and an apparent cell count decrease (I just can't imagine where else you find 200+lb of weight savings on a car that's already mostly aluminum and glass)

I was pretty sure they'd chase down market with a standard range model too but maybe that's coming later. A price *increase* on a car that uses the same stampings from 2012/2015 seems...profiteery. But there's nothing wrong with the basic shapes so I get it, though the frameless doors on S are sortof terrible for rear entry/egress.

Anyway, '21 PRE-LCI LR+ owner here, not sad I didn't wait, especially at that price, but also not sad that a used X is going to be a pretty cool ride even 10 years from now if we want another one. I'd happily take a new LR with the new features if mine got totalled tomorrow, but I'm also happy with my more traditional-looking interior without the dash ipad and my rotten kids would just bug me to turn on the rear screen all the time so that's a blessing in disguise too.

Cheers to Tesla in any event. Hopefully the new wheels are available to buy on the website soon!

OK, I've looked through this thread and there's still one glaring issue: Gear selection - I don't get it. I see it's supposed to be "intuitive" that the car makes the decision (yeah, okay - right). I've heard from someone that says either screen buttons (won't work for me) or I'm thinking perhaps one of the scroll wheels? Does anyone know definitively how it's going to work?
