MIAMI—Tesla Shields co-founders Jason and Sebastien worked together renting out real estate properties before they began making custom accessories for Tesla electric vehicles. But when state laws changed, the pair needed to find another way to stay in business.
Paired with interest in Elon Musk’s accomplishments in the electric vehicle market, it wasn’t much of a leap for the pair to shift to creating custom Tesla accessories when Jason noticed an opening in the market. The pair funded their first product themselves and began producing all-in-one door Tesla sill protection kits from a relative’s garage. Strong sales and steady production made initial prospects bright. Unfortunately, an equipment malfunction forced Sebastien and Jason to look in another direction when their machinery could not provide consistent quality cut vinyl in a timely manner.
Back at the drawing board, the pair turned to complaints about the aftermarket floor mats available for Teslas after one of Jason’s relatives expressed frustration that her new car had no floor mats and aftermarket options were not up to par.
“Most aftermarket mats are all rubber, bulky, badly fitting, and have logos,” Jason said. “So, we decided to design and manufacture a nice looking mat without logos that fits well and is waterproof to protect the car’s carpet.”
Sebastien designed the TeslaShields custom molded floor mats’ seamless design with at least 25 percent more coverage than anything else on the market, blending into the floor with as few gaps as possible. While Sebastien managed the design, manufacturing, and logistics, Jason focused on marketing and the company’s day-to-day tasks.
