Manual Lift Gate

I unfortunately have a model year right before they made power lift gates standard. Now with the whole covid19 crisis many stores are doing contactless order pickups. When I unlock my trunk, it just stays closed and I end up having to get out of my car to open the trunk, grabbing the items from the worker and putting it in my car, defeating the purpose of contactless pick up. I know it’s first world problems... Is there a way to add a spring on the struts to lift the trunk open when you unlock the trunk, and were the struts always supposed to do this? (I’ve had the car for awhile and forgot if it originally did)
