Marina del Rey CA-Delivery Location - QC wait times - Aug 2018

So I had some movement yesterday. I decided to give MDR a call again and this time the rep on the phone asked me for my VIN instead of just my name (which is what they had previously used to look me up). Thankfully I had that info, so I shared it. He said "your car is ready to go into final QC inspection. Your ISA should be able to schedule a date for you." This of course caused me to get extremely excited so I immediately called my ISA. She didn't pick up, so after a couple of hours I decided to email her. Within about another hour she called me back (from a blocked #, not the usual 702 one she usually rang from) and we scheduled delivery for Aug 23rd (this Thursday). She also gave me like 4 time slots in the morning and 4 in the afternoon so it was pretty obvious that they aren't that slammed on the delivery floor. Maybe they're just slammed on transferring from the Burbank airpot lot to the delivery center? Idk.

Did you get your car?? How was the delivery process??

I got the car!!! Guys, everyone is right. The moment you see her, all of the worries you've had after reading the horror stories on the boards go away.

TL;DR - Great MDR experience. Just what I wanted. Small paint issue. Getting that fixed when I get a chance to stop by a service center. Car is amazing.

With the amount of cars that they have at MDR waiting for delivery, the process feels very personalized. We had our appointment set for 3:15. We arrived about 25 minutes early (taking a Lyft), so they asked us to hang out in the waiting room for a bit. There was one couple ahead of us that was signing papers, so I took a chance to look at the Model 3 that they have in the showroom to familiarize myself with a few of the things I wanted to check out during my inspection.

Our delivery representative was available about 10 minutes before our 3:15 appointment, so we sat down and went through all of the docs. It was very painless. One thing I didn't know is that you cannot do any modifications to the DMV registration (vanity plates, etc - I wanted to get the black plates with yellow letters/numbers - no cute saying just a standard issue) until you receive the standard registration back from the DMV (about 45-60 days) so that made the process go even quicker. This probably took a total of 10 minutes. For this entire process we were the only people in the entire waiting and signing area.

Once you get through the docs, the delivery specialist passes you off to chat with a charging guy for a second while they go process all the docs. About 3 minutes later, Nick came back and was ready to show us the car.

He walked through a couple of things in the warehouse, and then said he would pull the car out to the side and we would continue our walk through there. He showed us how to work the app, open the charge port, open the frunk, and use the keycard.

We all then got in the car and he drove it down the ramp to the side of the bldg. There, my wife began the internal inspection (as he was walking her through how to use the features of the touch screen) which gave me a chance to look at the exterior. Overall, the car was in great shape. I think I have a tad misalignment of my rear lighting housings, but I'll look into that later. The one on the charge port side sticks out a couple thousandths of an inch further than the one on the passenger side. I also found one little paint chip at the top of where the front passenger headlamp housing meats the fender, but it was not enough to waste the time of having them fix it there. Nick took pictures of it and passed them along to the service center that is closer to where I live (the one in the valley), so sometime this weekend I"ll stop by and they'll fix it. Also, as we were going through all of this on the side of the bldg, I'd say a M3 was being moved from their detail center (other side of the warehouse) to the delivery side about one every every 3 minutes. So they have a lot of cars going through there. Our detail guy said they like to do 4 every 15 minutes, but then mentioned it was slow yesterday because they have increased qc at the burbank holding center so cars are coming over as fast as they used to.

Overall, I couldn't have asked for a better experience. There wasn't a fancy red runway, or a picture op location like I have seen at other delivery centers but that's ok. I just wanted to get into the car and drive.

And holy *sugar* guys. It's so much fun to drive. I ordered the AWD. I was expecting torque, but not this much torque. I can't imagine what Ludicrous mode feels like because this is a hell of a lot of torque. I've owned 2 BMWs and this is in another league. Can't wait to take it out of the city on some open roads!
Best of luck to everyone on getting their car to MDR!!! Fingers crossed they are all on a truck as we speak in transit to MDR!

Just picked up mine today , was there from 3-7:30pm. Had a few chips on the rear bumper touched up on the edges by the tail light, but touch up paint has no pearl in it so looks like white out. Body looked clean so far with about 3-4 contaminants under the clear , but pretty minor, most obvious ones are 2 on the driver side fender. Can’t see it from. 5ft away, it’s under the clear so I rather have factory paint then to get it repainted.

Checked each panel with a paint meter and all checks out around 120-160 microns so no repainted panels on the body. The bumpers are still slightly more yellow than the body, but not too bad, but the rear still mismatched but I have seen worse.

The rest of the body looks clean but needs to be corrected for sure as you can see dust nits in the clear that needs to be polished out this be perfect. Overall the car isn’t perfect but good enough to accept. Will consider sending to service for rear bumper mismatch once they figure that out.

Thanx for sharing... Getting ready for my delivery attempt tomorrow...

I called MDR and they said “hold on let me match you with a VIN right now”... 20 mins later, got a new delivery date for the 29th. Alexander there was wayyyy more helpful than my IDA ever was. The car has already passed inspection (P3D 18” black on black) so there shouldnt be any issues. Is it too early to be excited again??

If it passes inspection, it will be delivered, whether you accept it or not is the question.

As for it being black, the good thing is the contamination will be hard to see , making it look more flawless, any other issue as long as on the surface can be polished out by you or your detailer.

Since it was late yesterday by the time I fought thru West LA trafffic , I was able to wash it down today and get rid of all the stickly residue. One big thing I missed yesterday is the back half of my glass roof missing the UV coating , see pic for illustration. Also found about 8 small blemishes that I can live with , but the bumpers still don’t match. I expected that going in, but was hoping for the best. Front bumper has a slight yellow push compared to the body but not too bad, and the rear is the same old story that has been documented on the forums so still no resolution on a 50xxx vin, but slightly improved as I have seen worse.

For real you just called the main MDR line?? I’ve been cancelled 3 times and am waiting for a new VIN assignment. My IDA is fairly responsive but hasn’t had anything for me for over a week now. It would make sense that a local person would know better on which vehicles were available.

I would call the delivery center and speak to someone. They should be able to ping your car and give you the location. You might have to find a rep that is willing to do that for you.
Well, did it finally happen?

OMG... Totally worth the wait and anxiety... Absolutely smooth delivery... Outstanding folks working hard to get people into their vehicles...View attachment 329241

Awesome!

Congrats , looks like the group of us who weee cancelled earlier this month is starting to move

Glad to see you guys moving along. Hopefully LA is sorting itself out. I’m approaching a month with still no VIN reassignment ☹️ but was told a new batch may be coming down from Freemont Monday/Tuesday that “might” have my vehicle in it. I would think it would have been reassigned from the inventory in Burbank. Hohum
