Fewer than have been injured and killed unintentionally. Again, it's a statistical fact that owning a gun makes you less safe.
Canada required proper training, and *exams*, before granting gun permits. It eliminated nearly all accidental gun injuries. You can still get a permit to carry a gun outside a gun range in Canada, of course (plenty of hunters there!) -- you just have to prove you know what you're doing. Unlike in the US.

Unfortunately, the psychopath running the NRA is insistent on making sure that totally irresponsible untrained people be given access to guns immediately. This is probably in order to increase gun sales, since the NRA has turned into a front for the gun manufacturers.

Let's hope Trump doesn't screw this up?

Let's hope Trump doesn't screw this up?

Indeed, Trump had better not declare victory tomorrow right into the face of Xi, or all that we heard tonight could be reversed. Trump should simply allow Americans to realize for themselves what has happened tonight, without him tweeting deliriously about it.

Both sides behaving diplomatically is what is needed right now. Let's hope that turns out to be the case. If it does, then $290 should again prove to have been a significant support level for TSLA. And despite being a maker of noiseless electric cars, tomorrow it could be zoom-zoom upward for Tesla shares.

Without Trump this will never happen

Sorry, but I'm not giving credit to the orange one here. According to his tweets, he's only paying attention to his lawyer and syria. I have a feeling that china simply saw an opportunity to take the spotlight from Trump on capitalist ideals. Nothing was said about removing the tariffs on soybeans, which is what would hurt Trump's constituents the most.

This looks more like media being given a playbook and running with it.

I sent a link to Xi's speech to my local brain trust with this comment:

"Haven't time to watch all of it yet, but this is a real opening gambit for the Chinese century. I don't like bullies of any kind, but watching this PR battle between Xi and Trump is hilariously imbalanced. We see Confucius with a human face matched to a rational "socialist market economy." I've been puzzled by how to understand the psychology of bullies when they meet their match. So far Xi seems to be better at applying both sticks and carrots than Trump whose minimal ego understands only fear."

What Trump's supporters here misunderstand, or don't know, is these comments by Xi are predated to as early as 2015. QED. I guess I missed in the primaries and later in the election that Trump announced this detail of his strategy.

To von Clausewitz's fog of war we must ad the corollary, blinded by the cataract of one's own opinions. (More elegantly stated by a favorite quote from Hawking.)

Switzerland has been able to rely on the militia system precisely because they haven't invaded any other countries in hundreds of years.
The obverse also holds: Switzerland hasn't invaded any other country for hundreds of years* precisely because they have only a militia.

*or - ¿ever?

On edit: That is not "obverse". I think it's converse. Humble apologies for the unwarranted flagrant flagellation of the English language, and of logic as well.

Other warnings that might roil the markets

A characteristic of the Trump era is we all have paranoid days. Mine for today as an “extinguished” professor of Soviet studies is how wrong the main stream media is about Trump’s latest tweet warning the Russians.

Courtesy of CNN

"Donald J. Trump
@realDonaldTrump
Russia vows to shoot down any and all missiles fired at Syria. Get ready Russia, because they will be coming, nice and new and “smart!” You shouldn’t be partners with a Gas Killing Animal who kills his people and enjoys it!
Apr. 11, 2018, 6:57 a.m.'

The outrage of today’s media focuses on Trump’s earlier assertions he would not broadcast his moves in foreign policy, interspersed with criticism of Obama for doing so.

CNN misses the point of Russian perfidy. Trump is the early warning system that an attack is coming. A technical note: please focus on “smart!” in above. Is that to suggest at what setting the radars (or whatever) are set for aerial defense? Tomahawk missiles as used last time are inertial guided, so immune to radiation jamming.

The best spies are unwitting spies. Two illustrations from history.

Scholars have shown the Soviet atomic bomb project was discovered by a physics student in Russia who noted articles in high energy physics had disappeared from Western journals. He got an interview with Stalin.

See also, Herbert F. York, The Advisors: Oppenheimer, Teller, and the Superbomb. He suggests our test of a thermo-nuclear device proved the concept Sakharov and others had already theorized so speeding up the Soviet decision to build.

(Trial for treason under our Constitution requires at least two witnesses to an overt act, another reason the prez should stop tweeting.)

Certainly there are many reasons to believe Trump is unwitting. There may be another sudden jolt to the market. Even the National Review is chastising him for conflating the Russian investigation in recent actions against his lawyer with personal behavior. (I love the headline.)

Michael Cohen Office Raid & Stormy Daniels -- Implications for Trump | National Review

“This particular scandal was not caused by the Russia investigation, much as Trump seems determined to conflate the two. It is not the work of Bob Mueller, Jeff Sessions, or Rod Rosenstein. None of them had anything to do with the porn star going public. It was Trump’s conduct that caused this mess; it was the hare-brained scheme to cover up the mess that brings us to this pass.”

Further, though the cause and effect on the market is vaguely connected to Trump, is his latest victim Paul Ryan?
