During a conference call with investors, the boss of Maserati’s parent company said the brand would now spearhead the wider group’s push to electric, which will see more than half of FCA's range use some form of electric power by 2022.

The information in that article is contradictory and screwy. All by 2019? Then half by 2022? What, are they going backwards?

just so funny to see Maserati climbing on the ev bandwagon, even if they don't seem to really know what they are doing, after they were so pathetically disdainful of Tesla.

who cares, the more the merrier.

I do think that some are incredibly naiive about the engineering required to make durable EVs, quite probably european manufacturers will all just be using combinations of standard parts from Bosch et al though.

Agreed. I think everyone who decided that they could just jump on the EV bandwagon at any point in time is going to be sorely disappointed by the level of work it's going to take to catch up.

I remember when GM started the Volt project and how naive they were. Lutz was later quoted talking about how he had just thought it was going to be, you pay more for a battery pack, your motor and inverter are cheaper and simpler than a gasoline engine, and so there you go. To which anyone who had any experience with EVs at that point in time could tell you is totally not the case. Ignoring the challenges in the battery pack itself, low-volume EV motors and inverters (and particularly good ones) are expensive and hard to do right. Getting a powertrain that will be cheap, reliable, good performing, quiet, etc takes a lot of work. And you have to be willing to commit to volume. Electric motors have the potential to be cheaper than gasoline engines, but you don't overcome a century of ICE optimization and mass production overnight.

You have to read it carefully.
First, they said "every new Maserati will use some form of electric propulsion from 2019". This means new or refreshed models that are introduced during or after 2019 will be electrified. This could be hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or battery electric.

Second they said "the brand (Maserati) would now spearhead the wider group’s push to electric, which will see more than half of FCA's range use some form of electric power by 2022. FCA's brands, which also include Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler and Dodge, will all benefit from the new electric plan." So, this is more than half of all models across all brands will have hybrid, plug-in hybrid or battery electric options available.

PREDICTION: Honda will convert Acura to all-electric. If not, they SHOULD.

Maserati's are bum Ferrari's. Their thing was always the Ferrari engine in a luxury sedan/coupe.

We'll see if they actually go through with it.
