Good news. Elon just replied someone question about MCU retrofit. He said "Yes, you can upgrade hardware, although we also wrote software to accelerate rendering on old MCU. Coming out soon & makes a big diff."

Wonder if he's referring to before maps

Even if an MCU2 upgrade is possible (I still have doubts anytime soon), I'm sure it's not going to be a free upgrade to replace MCU1s under warranty.

I really think Tesla severely underestimated the customer demand for a new MCU, and this might be a U-turn from the previous executive escalation response that they aren't going to do it. If so, kudos to Tesla for listening to customers rather than digging their heels in on a previous position.


But, given what we know about MCU2, I would suspect the retrofit would be some sort of MCU1.5, not an actual MCU2 retrofit. Surely they'd want a connector-compatible part to MCU1 and just a different OS on the existing IC that remotely displays pre-rendered content from the new MCU.

Well 3G MCUs replaced under warranty got LTE MCUs!! You never know - I have a feeling I'll be having warranty issues with my MCU in a couple years!

Keep in mind we are "fairly" certain that the IC was also replaced with the MCU, so it may require a new MCU and IC to work with the MCU2 CID. Not to mention the new antenna in the left rear view mirror for the 5g WIFI.

Agreed, but I would hope I could get a parts only cost since there would have been labor involved in the repair anyway. Curious what the cost will be either way, though they probably don’t know yet.

It's way too early, in my opinion. I would wait a few weeks/months to see if you can get it replaced under warranty with the new MCU

That will just be the screen, not the MCU.

Just remember that when Elon says something is possible, he often means just that... not that Tesla will actually offer it. I guess that is his engineering head talking.

Right, like the battery upgrades. Elon said battery upgrades would be offered to all owners. Yet the price is so astronomically high that it makes more financial sense to purchase a new Tesla. Same will be true with the MCU retrofit.
