Wiki Mega-consolidated delivery quality issues thread and checklist

I apologize for the delay and providing updates. I had posted what happened in multiple places and between a job, receiving the a new Y and getting it taken care of and this, it's been a busy week. If interested, the North West Tesla Group on Facebook(yeah, I know facebook...) thread kinda of blew up https://m.facebook.com/groups/nwteslaowners/permalink/5180139375346364
Lot's of other negative reports of Renton though.

Quick ramble of the current status:
Basically where I'm at is that I'm told it will get taken care of and it's currently at the Seattle SODO location being worked on. (Estimated pickup date is this Weds) They will be replacing the bumper as well as fixing all the issues that Renton never fixed, as well as caused.
Seattle SODO looked top notice in quality and the person I spoke with seemed very receptive. (I do have hesitations that they are just telling me what I want to hear, and I have reasons to believe that, but I really hope I'm wrong)

I received a call from the service manger of Renton (I believe that's his title, but my cellular connection at the time was horrible) and he apologized and had told me that the person responsible has been identified and will be fired.
Personally I don't believe it can only be one person and since my post, I've heard numerous reports of terrible serious and "mystery" miles put on their cars.
That shop is so small that there is no way that others can't be aware of what's going on.

I do have hopes that everything will be resolved in the end. I also hope that Tesla goes above and beyond to show what kind of company they are (in positive way).
In the end, hopefully Tesla can provide better service (at least shut down or completely change Renton) as my wife and I have been big Tesla fans ever since our first Model 3. For a non-car person, she can't stop from talking about how much she loves Tesla.
When I first got my Model 3, I signed up to Lyft and Uber, just so I could drive it more and give others the experience of being in a Tesla. I've "made" many of neighbors at least give our a quick drive. (Especially the Plaid ;) ) I do quite enjoy making grown men giggle like school girls. 🤣

What I'm trying to say is that having that much passion for something and then to have Renton treat people's cars like that is so infuriating.
I can't wait to update the status of all this to how much Tesla went above and beyond!!

Oh and I recovered the USB drive files. So far, I have files leading up to probably where they put it in service mode and then about 10 minutes after the drive. I should have time this weekend to go through all of the videos though.

Side note: I've changed our first Model Y SC appointment (cosmetic/alignment issues)to this Monday at the Seattle SODO location. I'll check in on how my S is doing.
@GroovaEV Thanks for the update! Mine heads to Bellevue on Monday.

As I'm hoping to take delivery of my Model S Plaid soon, I've trying to put together a consolidated list of all the issues folks have been finding at the time of delivery of their cars, so I can look out for such issues before accepting delivery of mine.

The goal would be to note all issues of concern to you, take photos of them, and decide whether you want to take delivery as is and deal with them at service centers, or raise them to delivery specialists and potentially refuse delivery.

I know there's already a refresh issues thread going, and I've been inspired by that one a lot, but this one is specifically for things to look out for at delivery, and it's also not a pros/cons or list of dislikes.

Note that this does NOT include software issues or missing features, which we hope will be fixed with OTA updates over time.

If you've already taken delivery and see anything missing, please add it by incrementing the list with a numbered item.

Hoping this list will help others who are also about to take a delivery. Enjoy!

I was waiting for this moment - but I finally printed the checklist. I don't have a final date yet, but it should happen any hour now. I went to the Service Center and they told me that my car is on a truck and will soon be here. Est Delivery 11/23 to 11/25. Insurance is done, too. I hope I don't jinx it, but you guys have been with me since the start.

If you received a 2022 and used this checklist... I'm curious to hear how the NF build quality is, compared to those summer 2021 builds that spurred the creation of this list? What issues still plague the NF builds, and which ones are no longer present on the 2022s?

I can’t imagine there is any step-change without a change in tooling or process, which require a shut down and training. I would expect a slow secular trend of improvement over time.

@impastu There must be some feedback loop between SCs and production to reduce overall cost (of warranty repairs) for recurring issues. After all, they are a public company now and profit is king!

Totally agree but absent change in process, tooling and training, this quality feedback loop supports gradual improvement not step-change improvement.

@impastu There is also a learning curve in play. For instance, this summer and early fall, Tesla was in a rate increase production ramp up mode. They should be staffed, trained and in steady state production now (or soon) which would in itself result in better build quality.

Totally agree. The learning curve is aided with DC/SC feedback. I heard back last year or maybe more Tesla was recruiting a senior quality control role…maybe it’s still unfilled? It wouldn’t take a rocket scientist to catch 95% of the defects identified by TMC members who’ve taken delivery. So I attribute the ongoing issues to a preference for production velocity over quality. It’s never either or…but Toyota is a well-accepted case study of embedding quality control and cost reduction into the system, processes and culture. I’m sure Tesla will ramp up initial quality once production capacity approaches demand and market share growth slows.

They have to produce quickly because they have a huge backlog of orders dating back to January when they lied and said the car was in production and would be delivered in February/March. They don’t need a quality control manager. They need to stop lying and to complete the development of products before selling them.

Does anyone have a diagram of where all the speakers are, so we can check if they are all working? There are a bunch of speaker grill-like things, but I'm not sure if they are all speakers.

It seems like a lot of my speakers aren't doing anything at all...
same here. The subwoofer and rear speakers seem to be totally inoperable. I can get a little sound out of the rear speakers by turning on the ambient thing so it seems then they get the signal for ambient from the front speakers.

No way the 22 speakers indicated in the video are operating and it sounds MUCH worse than my 2014 UHF and 2018 model 3 sound. I keep waiting for software to fix but no changes so far. I have a ticket and a service date that I keep pushing back because too busy . Will take it in eventually..

also the microphone isn't working at all

The microphone for Bluetooth? Mine works.

Agreed the sound isn't great. At best it's the same as my model 3 was, maybe slightly worse. My 2016 model S with uhf was way worse, though.

Also, my plaid headlights are terrible compared to my model 3. How are they so uneven? Is it just me?

My MYP stereo is louder and crisper across the range, compared to my bastard Plaid. The Plaid headlight suck the big one, as compared to the matrix LEDs in the MYP. What would you expect, given the Plaid costs more than 2.5X the MYP?!

Yeah... Strange. I think the 3/Y benefits from being more of a clean-sheet design. The plaid is trying to retrofit upgraded components into an old chassis. I'm guessing the LED headlamps are just something trying to be a drop-in replacement for the old HID bulbs.

No idea why the stereo can't be better.

However, I did confirm those tweeters work now on the 2021.40.6 release with the immersive audio turned on.

Is anyone else waiting forever for parts?

I'm supremely frustrated at how long it takes for them to get parts for my car. They delayed my appointment by weeks from Early October to mid October telling me they were waiting for parts to come in. I finally dropped off the car and left it at the service center for nearly two weeks.

Upon pickup I discovered most items on my list were not done; they even told me I need to have another follow-up appointment because they were waiting on parts to address issues that I first identified when I first took delivery. They don't even have my rear shelf / covers yet. Why take my car in if they didn't have the parts to begin with!

Anyone have any luck with the HVAC whistle at low fan speeds? Or the subtle buzz from the stereo when nothing is playing?

It's hard when a car makes no sound, every little sound gets annoying.

Also, Tesla needs a Noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) expert. How did these things get past the design phase?
Brought that up to Tesla, they basically said within spec. The HVAC would whistle when you have the vent speed higher than 6 and only if it was directed at the driver / passenger only.
