Supercharger - Plantation, FL

Is there anything we can do to help move this along? I know that there are hundreds of other Superchargers, so I think Tesla has the construction process down to a science now as far as safety, esthetics, efficiency, reliability and usability go.

I don't think so. The cities here move at a very slow pace. If I had to guess, I wouldn't bet on anything before May.

Now back up to 20:

An additional processing fee of $580.00 is required per City Ordinance 2059, Sec 5-23 prior to resubmittal. 3rd Review.

Plantation requirements seem to be such a hindrance.
I still think they should just try two blocks south in the Tower shops shopping center.
That is the Town of Davie and probably could be finished and up and running before Plantation wakes up.

Long list of walkable stores and if placed on the west part of the lot even easier access to several restaurants not listed as part of Tower shops. Building a Trader Joe's there even.
Miller Ale house, Flanigan's, Chik-Fil-A, Taco Bell and Chipolte plus the Home Town Buffet a short walk.
Tesla should seriously consider it as it seems like Plantation is purposely trying to delay approvals in my opinion more things to do and easier access in and out.

Maybe somebody can nudge them of the idea. Probably save them money if less craziness to comply with Davie requirements.
Just a thought.

I would guess they've committed enough money to the Plantation permit process that it wouldn't make sense to switch at this time. I also think the Tesla Supercharger group has dealt with much worse than this.

Good point. I would cut the loss and move on freeing up time to work on other locations beside the Fort Lauderdale area. If they were public about it they would have an army of owners to assist. Maybe they already already approached the Tower shops management company as well and were turned down. That's the problem. Not knowing we can't help. Guess we will just have to wait. Odds are Model X will be out before a Fort Lauderdale Supercharger.

Move it from Plantation, especially after the objection to place any restriction (and signs) limiting parking to electric vehicles regardless if there is a 30 minute limit (as usual for many Supercharger locations) for non-electric vehicles. Along with the objection that the 'Tesla' on the Supercharger constitutes a sign that requires a separate permit that must have application submitted (probably requires another public hearing) and that will require the 'Tesla' to be 7 feet above the ground......
Get the message Tesla, Plantation doesn't want need or want you. Go find somewhere else that's friendlier and supportive of electric vehicles.

Regarding Plantation's objection to signage restricting parking to EVs using the Supercharger, has anyone engaged the City regarding the Florida State statute that makes parking an ICE vehicle in a space designated for EV charging a citable offence? Florida Statute sec. 366.94 (emphasis added) follows at the end of this post. It would seem that, with or without signage, ICE parking in an EV charging space is a violation of Florida State law. Plantation doesn't have to ticket offenders, but it would seem that the presence or absence of signage is superfluous to the fact that State law bars ICE parking in EV charging spots. However, posts elsewhere on this site do speak to the positive impact of clear signage and the emphatic use of green paint as a deterrent to ICE parking in EV spots, as many violations are just oblivious ICE drivers.

On a related note, I agree with those urging that the Plantation location be abandoned. It would seem that Plantation is, at best, jerking Tesla around. At worst, the City is acting in extremely bad faith, and, if the City doesn't want Tesla, it should just refund the fees paid and allow Tesla to look elsewhere. Perhaps Davie would be more welcoming. For example, the new Whole Foods (just south of 595 on University) has two free level-2 ChargePoint stations (with signs and green paint). We were ecstatic to learn of the plan to put Superchargers in the Plantation location. For the last 7-plus years, we have had lunch at least a couple of times a week at the TooJays in the Fountains. Being able to charge while having lunch would make our 130-mile commute much more affordable. That said, the seeming bad faith of Plantation makes us feel like we should avoid doing any business in Plantation. With the high level of new construction going on in the area, there certainly would be many viable sites that would present fewer permitting challenges than the Plantation location.

From Florida Statutes --

366.94 Electric vehicle charging stations.—
(1) The provision of electric vehicle charging to the public by a nonutility is not the retail sale of electricity for the purposes of this chapter. The rates, terms, and conditions of electric vehicle charging services by a nonutility are not subject to regulation under this chapter. This section does not affect the ability of individuals, businesses, or governmental entities to acquire, install, or use an electric vehicle charger for their own vehicles.

(2) The Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services shall adopt rules to provide definitions, methods of sale, labeling requirements, and price-posting requirements for electric vehicle charging stations to allow for consistency for consumers and the industry.

(3)(a) It is unlawful for a person to stop, stand, or park a vehicle that is not capable of using an electrical recharging station within any parking space specifically designated for charging an electric vehicle.

(b) If a law enforcement officer finds a motor vehicle in violation of this subsection, the officer or specialist shall charge the operator or other person in charge of the vehicle in violation with a noncriminal traffic infraction, punishable as provided in s. 316.008(4) or s. 318.18.

I am sure there are many more places that are more important than us in S Fla. For example you cant get from Atlanta up to Charlotte and beyond as they cancelled the Greenville Charger they need to fill that gap and some other places around the country. But I do understand how people coming to our area would like to know that when they arrive there is a place to 'Fill UP" without having to check into a hotel or wait for some 20 amp charger.

Down to 14 requirements now.

Well, not really. I'm the one that mentioned they were down to 20 from 31-32 way back when

But if you look at the requirements met/applied for, it's still really 32. It looks like they combined some of the requirements into one, like landscaping. So although the number is going down, it looks like no progress has been made at all, unfortunately.

I know it's no supercharger but we have a free CHAdeMO DCFC station located at Pinecrest Gardens for those looking to make the run down to the Keys. Plus, in a short time the Village of Pinecrest is installing two HPWCs that will also be free.

The enumeration is now down to 11. Whatever that mean. At least it means someone is looking at it and doing something.
