New update on the Tesla site!
  • New pin in Carlton, MN! Q2 2021. This will be awesome for driving up US 53, since you won't have to go into downtown Duluth if you need a charge, since this will give you a charge right near the Cloquet bypass. Really excited for that for trips up to the BWCA!

This is absolutely fantastic news! I'm always anxious when going up to Grand Marais due to the fact that there are only 4 stalls in Duluth...and nowhere to really wait in line if it's busy.

I'll actually be going up towards in end of July, so I'd be great if they can stick to that time frame.

Now if only they can put a station in Grand Marais everything would be darn near perfect.

This would be very nice, so that you don't have to go down Thompson Hill only to find out the Duluth location is full.

It would be great if somebody with more permit searching skills than me could see if something could be found for Carlton. Q2 is a pretty immediate timeframe, so there should be something in the works already. If I were a bettin' man, I'd bet this will be going in the parking lot of the Black Bear Casino.

Being purely selfish, and taking delivery tomorrow, here's what I'd like to see for MN...

Supercharger between the metro and Albert Lea, preferably around HWY 19 and Faribault (I live in Owatonna and work in the metro).

Supercharger around Virginia/Eveleth, and one in or around International Falls on HWY 53. I've got hunting land a couple miles outside Voyageurs National Park, so having fast charger instead of using a dryer plug at the shack would be nice. To be fair, I'm usually driving my truck up to the hunting land (have to haul side by side, or boat), but being able to fast charge all the way up to the falls would be slick.

I personally wouldn't worry about the Faribault one. It's only 65 miles from Owatonna to Minneapolis. That round trip is doable in most Teslas most times of the year. Worst case in the dead of winter, you might need to hit up a Supercharger in the cities before heading home.

Regarding fast charging vs. a dryer plug, I'd suggest going with the latter whenever you can. Fast charging reduces the longevity of your battery pack, and actually takes time where you're waiting on the car to charge. Charging on a 240V plug while you sleep is the way to go.

Late January/Early February is precisely when I'm worried about not making it home without hitting a supercharger if I'm stuck at the customer site all 12hrs of my shift where I cannot plug in. Lakeville would be convenient also for a quick top-off in the winter. I'm not really concerned, just would be nice to have something available south, or in the south of the metro, for the really bad weather days.

As to the superchargers up north, I will be able to get to Hinkley or Cloquet without issue, but from there to almost International Falls is where it would be nice to have another option. Sure, speed limit on 53 is only 65 or 60, and it's around 150 miles from there to my shack, but it would be nice to have the option to get some juice in a hurry.

Agreed. That being said, there is a Target in Virginia, right off 53. From there, Ely is a much easier proposition.

Can you look for possible activity for Carlton MN location?
There is also a Target opening Q2 pin on the Tesla map for Carlton MN, location unknown at the moment, but if I had to guess most likely the Black Bear Casino and hotel complex at the NW corner of Hwy 210 and I-35 exit. There isn't much of anything in Carlton proper for amenities
So, I went looking. Based on your guess about the Black Bear Casino from the Bemidji thread, I checked there. Nothing indicating current or imminent work, but when I looked through the past history of utility location requests for that property, I saw a ticket from October 2020 with a name that was familiar--Design Tree Engineering. In the past, as part of the site design process for superchargers, Tesla hired them to do the boundary and topographical surveys at Pembina, ND; Grand Forks, ND; Fargo, ND; and Alexandria, MN. So, I think that's very likely a hit for the future supercharger spot in Carlton.

I then thought to check all the tickets that Design Tree had opened over the last couple years and check them against places we know Tesla is planning superchargers. I found a bunch of likely locations: Bemidji (already known about), Carlton, Bloomington, Maple Grove, and Vandais Heights. I'm going to start threads for the new ones, but having the explanation here on how and why I think they are for superchargers will make it easier.

Here are the new threads:

Also, in addition to the ones I listed above which I'm fairly confident will be superchargers, I also found a Design Tree survey ticket for a location in Lino Lakes which I feel has an okay chance of being for superchargers. But Tesla doesn't yet have Lino Lakes listed on their map, so I felt it was too speculative to start a thread for it. The site is well placed right off of I-35W at a Casey's convenience store/gas station. And Casey's is a chain that has hosted superchargers before.

Address: 7601 Lake Dr, Lino Lakes, MN 55014

Which is interesting since there is a large Target store on the other side of Lake Drive.

Another interesting tidbit on that location is that Casey's just bought that location. They don't even have their usual signage up there yet.

Very true, Virginia has a Target store as possible location. I-Falls might be more challenging. The big box Store options are on US 71 though. Country market, Super One foods. I-falls makes the trek to Dryden or Kenora, Ont very easy.

Northern MN makes a big argument for getting (or borrowing) a CHAdeMO adapter. There are CHAdeMO chargers in Virgina, Chisholm, Lutsen, and two in Ft. Frances, among other places.

Drove by the Black Bear Casino and noticed a section of the parking lot being torn up. Talked to a construction crew member and he confirmed Tesla superchargers were being installed. He didn’t have a completion date. Black Bear is located at the intersection of I35 and Hwy 210, a couple miles west of Carlton MN. Doubt I’ll ever use it since the casino is less than a mile from my house. It’ll be nice when the Bemidji supercharger is ready.
