Missing Tow Package?

Just found out my MX 75D that I took delivery on Sept. 29th is missing the tow package. I thought tow package has been standard equipment since the end of July?!? is anyone else with recent delivery missing the tow package as well?

See my post here on missing tow package on recent deliveries. Towing...actually Airstreaming...with a Model X

Also you can read up on possibly related issues with the Tesla/Bosal system in related threads, like ones from @ohmman who has some good videos on the subject.

Question on this, was the receiver supposed to come in a carry/storage bag?
I took delivery back in June and mine had the tow package but no receiver. The delivery specialist just went and got one off the shelf, but no bag. Just set the receiver in the car. Now I'm wondering if I'm missing a storage bag that would look a lot nicer than the plastic bag I put it in now.
Yep, it comes in a fabric cubical-ish zipper bag with a foam insert that the receiver fits into. Mine was in the trunk along with the UMC.

I took delivery on September 29 in Fremont and did not receive the tow package. They called my the weekend before to advise it was on backorder and I could either get a refund ($600-800? can't remember) or get a due bill for installation when they come in. No ETA for parts to come in.

Do you have your option code list? TW01 is the code for the tow package. Mine has it (as I assumed from when it was built and that I have the receiver in the trunk..). I still need to look under the cover at the rear, as I just got the car back....

This is a good point people raise, as the option codes are the only mention of this. The MVPA and View Spec line item (not option codes) do not list the standard equipment such as SAS and Tow Package. For things that changed recently (like tow), this is an issue.

Lol... The price in the online store is significantly higher than that... that might not be including some internal parts that all X’s have now, but you would think those frame members would have minimal cost; this price probably includes labor also, but still!

Model X Tow Package

Okay, stupid question. Finally had a second to see if I actually have the dang tow bar behind the cover and I can’t find instructions or an example of how to remove the cover!

There are two plastic ‘screws’. I’ve tried turning them and prying/pilling them, both with no success. Before I break something, how is this supposed to work? (If there’s doc on this, my bad!)

You should see a small notch on it. Use a small flathead screwdriver and use it to pop it out. It doesn't take very much pressure so be gentle to not damage it. :)

Once it is out what looks like halfway, you can pull the whole thing out.

Then you can wriggle the plastic cover off.

To re-install, wriggle the plastic cover back on. It'll take a little bit of work to line it up and to snap it back in.

Push the screw back in while the top part is still in the halfway out position. Once it is in the hole, you can push the top part of the screw to make it flush and lock it in.

Hope that helps!

It is, thanks much! Couldn’t tell if they were pop buttons or what!

From what I've seen after testing different vehicles, if you have the two plastic rivets, you don't have the tow package -- the ones I've seen with tow package installed have a new plate on the bottom with a single screw in back center that is used to mount/unmount it. However maybe yours is the exception so let us know.

Yep, under the cover is the normal tow bracket and wiring socket for trailer harness with dust cover. All normal as far as I can tell. So there are other covers that have different fasteners? That’s weird because I can’t see where they (it) would go since the two ‘buttons’ are the only holes I saw.

You or anyone have a pic of that cover?

Edit: see from a pic way back that there are the two holes for the original cover and then another for the ‘real’ cover. Hmmm. Assume the ‘real’ cover is easier to remove and doesn’t need a screwdriver and buttons that will seld destruct in a few times. Have to check with the SC next time I’m there if I can get a pic to show.

I wonder how many combos of this there are now between no bar, no receiver, receiver not in bag, wrong cover...

My cover looks like yours, but no tow package for me. The dust covers I've seen over installed tow packages look like the one on p.72 of latest MX owner's manual: has one screw. I had assumed that when tow package was installed, they placed a new easy-to-remove cover plus a bracket the center screw fits into. But perhaps you have "the new improved dust cover." :)

Jeez... maybe, again, Fremont was out of *this* part (the cover). Lol.... And, yeah, I see that in the manual, which isn't exactly 'current', it's from January (the PDF version).
