Mobileye announces crowd-sourced digital map for fully autonomous driving; GM, VW sign up | #CES2016 | SiliconANGLE
by Collen Kriel | Jan 7, 2016

Mobileye NV, who build sensors focused on autonomous driving, announced that it is creating a crowd-sourced, constantly updated digital map of the world to allow for fully autonomous driving. Top automakers General Motors Co and Volkswagen Group have already signed on to include the mapping technology into its vehicles.
Mobileye is also expecting a third large automaker to join the project. The name of the automaker is unnamed at this stage, but we know it will not be Tesla Motors Inc. as its cars already use Mobileye vision systems.

Can't wait to see what features end up shipping to production. Data could be very useful and functional, but could also be very shall we say 'watered down' if capabilities of various cars to process and send data back to the cloud has processing delays....yatta yatta; might not be as real time as it should be and thus much less useful and functional.

Isn't Tesla already essentially doing this on their own? They'll have to weigh the benefits between owning the data themselves vs. having a larger pool of data to work with.
Yes, and everyone said that is what makes Tesla unique compared to everyone else ... looks like everyone else using Mobileye will have the "same" advantage. Actually others may have more data quicker (if all the others get to combine data). I'm sure Tesla is gathering a lot of data but with so few cars certainly these people are pretty much traveling the same roads everyday at this point.
