Amazingly the battery pack doesn't appear to have caught fire itself. Though it did suffer from a RUD and spill cells all over the place, of which at least one of was reported to have started a fire.

Good to hear that innocent bystanders were not harmed. Amazing that the driver walked away with minor injuries but I hope that they throw the book at him. Was not familiar with the term RUD; had to Google it and then came up with this...

RUD, The Mad Libs Game (select one word from each column to come up with a description for the accident):

Rapid.........Unscheduled.....Disassembly
Really........Unfortunate.....Destruction
Remarkably....Unusual.........Damage
Randomly......Uncontrolled....Disaster

A couple smoking hot battery cells went through a home's windows and one landed on a bed and the other in someone's lap! The car must have been rotating rapidly and spewing batteries everywhere! The firemen picked up loose battery cells and put them in metal buckets! Bucket should be full of water to eliminate thermal runaway. Could turn into a lithium fountain! In Germany they have portable tanks they immerse whole cars in after a wreck to contain battery fires. Too many cars erupting in fire hours or days after an accident.

Does anyone else gag at the phrase “high rate of speed”?

Seriously.

Police and journalists love that phrase and they all use it to mean “velocity” when “rate of speed” really means acceleration.

Just stop. o_O
I would aver that it doesn't actually mean anything in good English. If you really wanted to talk acceleration, you MIGHT say a high rate of change of velocity.
