Model 3 Deliveries

Have anyone heard of VIN assigned the people from the last batch of invites from last Friday? (Like me...)

I was hoping for a delivery before year end as I am very close to the factory and can take delivery right up to 12/31. I have a feeling that TSLA is working overtime to make as many deliveries before quarter end as possible.

Today is a bittersweet day for me since I took delivery my Model 3 but this will also be my last post on TMC for reasons explained later.

First, trip down memory lane:

Late March 2016
I got in a line at 4am, with a bunch of crazy tesla fanboys like myself!

So I was moderately high up the queue.

Sept 2016
I got impatient, so I ordered a Model X.

So I was bumped up higher up the queue.

Mid-Late 2017
I got impatient again, so I quit my job and joined Tesla.

(I don't really have a good picture for this event so here's my corporate jacket)

So I was further bumped up the queue.

Today 2017
I got my Model 3

Looks better in my garage than the leaf! (No hate for the leaf, loved that car for 3 years.)

A family shot!!

Conclusion

I may have skipped a few details in the timeline but they probably are not important.

So I initially wasn't sure if my delivery today was due to my employment or due to my current owner/line-waiter status, since I ordered my car along with the first batch of non-employee current owners. Regardless, since I am an employee now, I do not ever want to put myself in a situation where I am misconstrued as speaking for Tesla, and so I am going to immediately cease posting on TMC to avoid the slippery-slope. Tesla has been a DREAM JOB for me for a while and I couldn't be happier in my new role.

I did want to do this one last post because TMC is a great community and I've thoroughly enjoyed reading and contributing to the its fans around the world, and wanted to close the loop on this journey to my Model 3 with this last post.

Finally: Model 3 is so fun to drive, I can hardly believe how quick and nimble it is, even with my short time with it. No, there is no HUD. Model X will always be the tank, the family hauler and roadtrip car for me. I love both cars, I love the company, and I will miss TMC, but always know that I'll be working my ass off to continue the mission.

Is the price a secret?

Just picked up my Model 3 today at Fremont. Delivery started an hour after scheduled, they seemed pretty busy, lots of families there. Car is overall fantastic, and a net upgrade over my early Model P85 S (which I plan to sell).

Pros vs ye olde S:
  1. Smaller (I like smaller cars in general)
  2. Cheaper to own
  3. Steering and braking feel tighter and more responsive
  4. Autopilot! (already tried it on the way home, love it for slow traffic)
  5. LTE connectivity
  6. Screen is very responsive, maps scroll and load with greater fluidity
  7. Parking sensors, power mirrors, powered charge door, and other stuff I've been missing
  8. Great visibility (except for center rear view, which is maybe worse than an S)
  9. My phone is my key (love that it picks up the phone from very far away, don't have to walk right up to the door)
  10. A center storage area, instead of a big empty trough.

Cons:
  1. Mostly negligible performance loss
  2. Center screen isn't angled towards driver, which bugs me a little. The further right you go on the screen, the more the angle is a problem
  3. Backup camera is a downgrade from the S. It's lower quality and extremely fisheyed. The only quirk I don't think I"ll acclimate to.
  4. Less storage, no power lift gate (not that I ever filled the S to capacity)

Contacted my OA (725/Vegas) to confirm that Friday MDR delivery was still set. (Big thanks to TMC posters who alerted to potential last-minute surprises.)

Helped me track down Delivery Specialist who had not yet reached out. Glad I did so.

Delivery delayed just one day. Apparently issue is that production rate has gotten ahead of Fremont --> SoCal trucking capacity. A very encouraging sign!

Psyched for Saturday ...

My DS called on Thursday evening and I got a VIN last night but it does not look like I can take delivery before end of year. I was hoping to take advantage of the tax credit to lessen the tax blow. :-(
