Model 3 got hit on the side today!

@billionaiire You sound like a rare specimen these days: a level-headed person. The ultimate manipulation is to not make waves, be nice and polite. But I hope you can also recognize humor, like my "advice" to ask for a $3.5M Bugatti as a rental.

I thrive on sarcasm. Don’t you worry - I just don’t know if OP does so I just wanted to make sure to call that out haha.

I got a text from the Tesla Wexford Service Center today. I had sent them the photos of the car while scheduling a service appointment in the phone app. They said they don't do these sorts of repairs, and referred me to the 2 local Tesla certified body shops in Pittsburgh - Cochran Collision and Mascari Auto. I'm taking the car to Mascari tomorrow morning and to Cochran Collision on Thursday and will see what they say about it.

My insurance is Grange, the accident causer is with State Farm. My insurance people said the same thing, I can't file a diminished value claim with State Farm until after the repairs are finished. My insurance person said State Farm would be calling me, they have not called yet.

At this time, I think I'm not going to use the link my insurance people sent me to take photos and upload to get the small check. I'll wait a few days and decide which repair shop will do the work. Then let them handle it.

Anyone in the Pittsburgh area have any Tesla crash experience with either Cochran or Mascari?

I went to Mascaris' today. They had a few Teslas in for repairs, and some other "almost as good" cars (BMW's, Audi's, Cadillacs) getting work done. I talked to their person doing the estimate, they seemed to have good knowledge of what needed to be done and the details of it. Their estimate came in at just under $7800. Fine with me, it's the other guys insurance paying for it. I don't care if it costs $1,000 or $20,000.

State Farm hasn't called me yet, so by the time they do and a decision has to be made, I'll be able to go to the other place on Thursday morning and listen to what they have to say. Pick up some details and learn from this.

that is way cheaper than I had expected. Don’t worry, it’ll cross 10k easily by the time they are done...

Update.

I went to Cochran's today and got their estimate. $9000. And that's without both rear tires being replaced. Just one.

After considering both repair shops, I think I'm going to go with Mascari's. And it's not about the money, but Mascari is a much smaller family owned shop, whereas the Cochran western PA conglomerate of automotive things and dealers is like Wal-Mart. I think I'd be more of "just a number" in their system, and that's not acceptable. I want more personal attention.

So I'll be on the phone with the insurance people today and let them know, more news as it happens.

How much cash would it realistically take for you to drive a Model 3 with a few scars,
after a little semi-skilled remedial pounding and some paint ?

Don't say "never", we all know that when all is said and done, that's not exactly true. ;-)

If it's more than the $10K + rental reimbursement, that explains the body shop racket.

I'm not going to demand any particular sort of car. If the Wexford service center has an older Model S, that'll be fine. If I have to rent a.... GASOLINE car for a while, well.... err... I guess I'll survive.

First and foremost, you won't be getting a loaner from the service center. That much I can assure you .... that's not a "thing" for accident repairs - not for Tesla, not for Ford, not for Mercedes, not for anyone. You'll be looking for a rental car. Not to be a downer, but better to nip that thought now.

Now, as for the check for the repairs - no, you want them to coordinate directly with the body shop, not through you. Estimate, supplementals, all that - you really don't want to be the middleman in that process. Let their adjuster handle it directly with the folks doing the work. Otherwise, it's a ton of paperwork for you that you really don't need to be part of.

Also, they will not start diminished value settlement until the final repairs are done because they won’t know until then how much it’ll cost. Don’t push it. They’ll turn you away. Be nice in those negotiations, be patient, and you might see some compensation. You won’t sign waiver until that’s done so the insurance will make sure that they settle it with you. They won’t leave it hanging.

... and I'll add - don't be disappointed if you end up with very little for your efforts here. DV is notoriously difficult. Hate to say it, but the Model 3 is a midrange car; it's not a precious collector's edition so DV really isn't a huge amount. You'll have a big fight to get anything.

I'm not trying to discourage it, but don't be surprised if you get to the end, through an onerous process and say "... that's it?"

(We took a substantial loss in value on our Enclave - nothing to be done about it since it was a deer hit. Couldn't locate the deer's insurance company to claim DV.)

Update.

Since State Farm hadn't called me yet, I called them. Turns out they had one digit in my phone number wrong, they had my name horribly misspelled, and they didn't have my mailing address correct, or an email address at all. We had a nice conversation. I did not make any demands or ask what was taking them so long, or anything like that. Just the facts, plain and simple.

They got a slightly shortened version of the accident story, they didn't say anything about recording the statement. I was sure to mention how the other driver admitted fault to the police. An odd thing he asked me - "Why were you on that road at that time?" Like it makes any difference or it's his business.

And since the day of the accident, I've driven through this intersection, in both lanes, at least 4 or 5 times each. And yes, if I were out of my lane, it would have been very obvious. I didn't just space out on it.

They also want me to download their app and upload photos of the car. To get their own estimate. I told them the numbers I got from the 2 body shops. But I don't want to do that photo app thing, I just want them to interact with the body shop and I can stay out of it. Based on what a few people have written above, I think that'll simplify things.

So I'll talk to the body shop tomorrow and start the process.

I got my Sabrent HDD enclosure and a Samsung EVO 860 250 GB SSD drive today. I got it all put together, formatted in exFAT, and set up in the car. Now's a good time to have high quality video saved to a good drive - AFTER the accident happened!

And someone asked how much cash would it take for me to drive the car with a quick patch job? Well no, this isn't some old Ford Escort. This is a Tesla, and as a member of the Tesla Elite, a quality vehicular appearance is paramount. No quick & cheap patch up work allowed.

I dropped the 3 off at the repair shop today, they will be able to begin work tomorrow, but there are other issues making the work time more difficult.

My insurance said if I go through State Farm directly, the $500 deductible will not apply, and so far, State Farm hasn't given me any problems about getting the repair work done. They received a copy of the shop estimate and photos, so we'll see how it goes.

So far, every phone conversation I have had with both insurance companies has been good. No one did any screaming, yelling, demanding, etc. Just normal good conversations.
