People have speculated it’s several things:
There were several posts on it over at the Model 3 owners club (including input from one of the owners), but no one knows for sure.
- Vent to equalize pressure in the trunk.
- Vent to climate condition the trunk.
- Access port to the rear brake light (my preferred theory).
Need some way to replace the light.I don't even understand the third one. It goes between the main cabin behind the rear seats and the trunk. How can it be an access port for anything?
The other one you didn't mention is that it lets more light into the trunk for when you are accessing it.

If it's a vent doesn't that mean it needs to open? This looks more like a little window that doesn't open in any automatic way (I suppose, as with any car part you can somehow pry it off/open)
If the subwoofer for the premium sound is in the truck area then it makes sense to let air through to equalize pressure
Yeah, who needs a vent between the cabin and the trunk? Is this Elon playfully dissing hatchbackers, lol?Based on this video:

He said it is a vent. I'm wondering now if you have a stinky gym bag in the trunk, would you smell it in the rest of the car?
I'd put my stinky gym bag or take out from a restaurant in the frunkBased on this video:

There is no way to remove speaker grill unless you tear down whole parcel shelf.Since we're on this subject, does anyone know how to remove the grille above this hole in order to add some felt? I've got a bit of a rattle with the speakers in there.
