I ran into an instance once where the J1772 was locked into my 3. Figured I needed to ensure car was unlocked. So I opened the 3 door. The car still would not unlock the J1772 handle. I had to use the Charge Door Unlock button on the app. Upon pressing that button, it unlocked.

Every other time so far that it has been charging, I have been able to remove the J1772 handle without this extra step. Not sure what the deal is.

If you pull the J1772 plug out of the adapter, then the car will lock back down on the adapter very shortly after. The best way to handle it is to pull the plug and the adapter out together.

That's not what happened. I always pull them out together. The port was just locked and wouldn't unlock even with car door hanging open. Pressing the unlock button on the app worked through. Not a big deal. Was just strange. Would be nice if you could just turn off the locking completely; I don't really care for it and am pretty much never in a situation where it would be a problem if someone else unplugged me. I looked in the UI but didn't see any charge port locking preferences I could fiddle with.

Unfortunately, it's a safety thing. Tesla opted to put the lock inside the car instead of in their handle, so they HAVE to lock the port while they are charging or someone could just yank it out causing it to arc. They could unlock it when charging ends, but then someone who brushed against the handle or tripped on the cord could knock it loose.

Help! My issue is a bit different. My adapter keeps getting stuck on a VOLTA handle - 3x it has happened in the last 2 weeks on 3 different VOLTA stations. VOLTA customer support says their handles have been updated but it should not have issues with a Tesla adapter - I find it odd that it happened all of a sudden. I now have to forcefully wiggle the adapter out of the handle and it's probably damaging my adapter now. Has this happened to anyone?

I know this is an old thread but if you haven't heard already Volta has difficulties and melting issues with Tesla's j1772 adapters I recommend you not using Volta if you can avoid it.
