Model 3 long range RWD met its match #covid Yellowstone with limited charging d/t Covid

So I’m in Yellowstone right now and I’m considering renting an ICE car. If the west entrance was open this would not be a problem because the west entrance is able let you reach the north and eastern areas but this option is not possible because #covid19. The west entrance from Idaho is close so I can’t use that Superchargers to pick up a precious electrons. I have to drive north from the southern entrance so it’s a 1 1/2 hr drive just to go to Yellowstone past grand Teton. I can do a full charge with 325 miles of range but if I go to the northern most areas with my long range rwd I’ll probably get stranded. Anyway, I’ll go to the western part tomorrow where old faithful is, and my 325 range should be enough. But I probably can’t use my model 3 for the far flung areas. There’s only level 2 chargers in 2 areas and that’s not enough.

Anyway I have to humbly accept my model 3 can’t make the far flung areas and will need to burn some fuel to get there.

Did you check Plug Share for Level 2 or CHAdeMO Chargers?

Whats wrong with L2 chargers? Looks like there are three in Yellowstone that are currently accessible.

• Old Faithful: At the Old Faithful Lodge Cabins (Lower Loop), outside of Showerhouse 1.
• Canyon Village: In front of both Rhyolite and Washburn lodges.
• Lake Village: In front of Teal employee dorm.

Ok LR tesla rwd performed like a boss. With some caveats. I didn’t get to push it past the northern entrance where mammoth and Lamar valley because it’s closed due to covid restrictions. I just stayed around the run. Charged to 310 miles 1st day and 95% (don’t know how many miles). Went all the way to Hayden valley. Saw 2 bears and 4 wolves. Ended up going home with 33% charge from 95%. We did go to old Faithful and charged from 70% to 76%. All in all covid restricted our areas significantly so no need to truly be able to push it and no need to rent an ice car to make it to all the attractions

Oh and one last thing. We are so tesla spoiled in SoCal. I’ve seen less than 10 here starting from the border of Wyoming into the park.
I saw a red tesla model 3 at the entrance of Yellowstone, I took a picture of them and the guy gave me a thumbs up. My car is also red. I also saw a white model 3 coming into the park and that was it. No other Tesla’s in the park.

For the first time in the last 5 months I got varies positive I love you car comments from various people. That was neat since Tesla’s aren’t common here.

I’m amazed that you saw that many in rural areas of Wyoming. My last road trip in the west and Midwest I hardly saw any at all, except at Superchargers, and not that many even there.

Stayed in West Yellowstone and charged each evening at the Supercharger there.

We came in and out via the North entrance, and topped up on the way in.

All worked out great, though put 6K miles on our 2018 Model 3 LR/RWD.

Weird to imagine; here in the PNW, Teslas are everywhere. I keep trying to have some amazing remote adventure, like Cutthroat Lake in the fall in North Cascades National Park, and still find another 3 there at the trailhead.

On that point, there is a real market for someone like EVgo to strategically drop a few 50kW charge points in the crossroads of remote national parks and attractions...

I'll second the recommendations for using Plugshare to find L2 chargers. We did Yellowstone in an MX 75D. Using Plugshare, and getting permission from the various hotel or building managers, we had no problems. One hotel manager by Yellowstone Lake escorted us into the maintenance yard and let us plug into a NEMA 14-50 for as long as we needed. We just planned our activities around the day's charging location.
To maintain good will between the park and EV owners, it's important to get permission before plugging in, especially at the employee dorms. But we found the staff to be most gracious and never got turned down.

We have no superchargers here in Alaska. Very few PlugShare as well. We’ve had a Tesla for going on 7 years, just under 4 years with an S before we sold it, and now over 2.5 years with a LR AWD 3. Just this winter I’m seeing more and more Tesla’s up here, pretty much all 3 and Y.

I’ve had no problems regularly going ~250 miles round trip from the house in areas with no access to charging.

We never had to charge up during the day.

Yes there's a lot of distance, but you are usually going quite slow and never at anything approaching freeway speeds. There such a thing as a "bear jam", also a "bison jam", and an "elk jam". At times, traffic resembles a bad Atlanta rushhour.

There are destination chargers inside the Park, just in case you are nervous, but know where they are before you enter the Park as cell phone reception is spotty.

I have a long range and doing a 90% charge you have plenty of range driving all over the park. As the others mentioned you drive slow 35 miles many many times. If your driving 75 yes you may run out but I found you drive slow through the park I was very efficient.
