Tesla’s first quarter production numbers show the company is gaining speed building the Model 3, still CEO Elon Musk says he’s back to sleeping on the factory floor.
“Car biz is hell,” Musk said in a series of tweets addressing a report of an engineering personnel shake-up related to the production woes.
The Information reported that Musk had taken over Model 3 production from Tesla’s vice president of engineering, Doug Field. Musk replied to the reporter on Twitter, saying he asked Field, who was in charge of both engineering and production, to focus on engineering in an effort to leverage his experience to make cars easier to build.
Musk has called the Model 3 ramp “production hell,” and has previously mentioned sleeping at the factory. The bottleneck has been attributed to equipment assembling batteries at Tesla’s Gigafactory, but Musk’s presence at the company’s Fremont, Calif. car factory may indicate he’s now more focused on car assembly.
Tesla said Tuesday that it produced 2,020 Model 3 vehicles over the previous seven days. “It is a testament to the ability of the Tesla production team that Model 3 volume now exceeds Model S and Model X combined,” the company said in a release. “What took our team five years for S/X, took only nine months for Model 3.”
