Wiki Model 3 Reservation Tally

I went for a purely fun test drive of the Model X last year. When I told the specialist that I was waiting for the Model Y, he suggested it may actually not be a bad idea to put down a reservation on a 3, and then transfer my reservation to the Y later in order to "jump the line" as it were.

Is this a thing? As much as I'd love to be where you M3 reservation holders are at, unfortunately it's just not gonna work for me as a vehicle. So the reservation would be purely strategic.

I have not seen anything that would support this theory. I would assume you could cancel your Model 3 reservation and then make a Model Y reservation as soon as they became available but I don't see how that would give you any advantage over any other early Model Y reservationist.

There hasn't been anything to disprove the theory either. I've been thinking about doing the same in the next month or two. I think there atleast some chance that Model Y will be revealed at the Model 3 Part 3 event, and Tesla well let reservation holders shift to a Model Y.

I believe there is 'some chance', but I really hope they don't. The Model ☰ already has far more Reservations than Tesla thought they might get. If it turns out to be even more popular than it currently seems, they will have the Model S versus Model X situation all over again. Only where they will be continually building capacity to handle Model ☰ demand, while Model Y Reservation holders continue to endure... The WAIT. They shouldn't reveal the Model Y until they can be certain of making first Deliveries en masse within 18-to-24 months.

Honestly, I'm ambivalent about transferring reservations. If there was a way to game my position in the Model Y reservation cue then I'll happily take advantage of it. But really, if there is a segment of Model 3 owners who would rather wait the extra year and a half for a Model Y, then Tesla should do that and unveil & start reservations-- first, to clear the way for those who would REALLY rather have the Model 3, and second to get thru that production ramp so they can move to the Model Y as quickly as possible.

I'm really really hoping that Tesla learned some lessons from the Model X and doesn't announce the Model Y until the Model 3 has hit full production. The company really needs to show that it can make profit with the 3 before they spend a lot more money building another production line for the Model Y. Build, produce, show it works, and then move on to the next model. Later they can introducer more than one model at once, build, produce, show that it works and then expand.

I too see no advantage of having a 3 reservation for getting a Y reservation.

I am sure the reservation process for the Model Y will be same as the Model 3. If there are people who flip their reservation, that is their decision, but I can't see Tesla allowing reservation holders to make a decision to flip before the official reservation process begins.

Thanks. I think I have to wait for an admin to confirm my account somehow. It states I don't have permission to change things yet.

Here, I'll save you some time. ;)

Hello all, just put down my reservation for an M3. Wish the MY was out would have put it down on it.
Cheers,
Eric B.
Congrats on the reservation. Since you just placed your reservation, unless your already an owner, it will probably be at least 12 - 18 months before you get asked to configure. The Model Y may well be announced by then so you might be able to transfer your reservation.

I made my second reservation, seconds after the reveal, hoping the same thing. I suspect my model 3 will just be a bridge to the model Y for me.
