Notice the missing trim in this spot (red highlight circled) it appears there is an opening for a retractable device maybeView attachment 230760 ????

You can see from the other pictures it seems to be missing in the other cars too. Likely to allow for tilting of the wheel.

Nope, there's silver trim in the rest of the dash. It's only missing above the steering wheel. Here's a higher resolution picture from electrek:

My guess: They didn't want the steering wheel to get too hot sitting out in the sun. So they draped their jacket over it.

I tend to put a dashboard sun-shield up in my car whenever I leave it parked out on a sunny day.

Owners manual states that the steering wheel doubles as a coat hook when parked. So obvious.

it's a removable steering wheel. when in FSD mode you can remove the steering wheel and store it in the frunk.

Of course it could be some new steering wheel controls, but if they wanted to keep them secret, why even build them into the RC prototypes? Those buttons aren't necessary for the kind of testing you do on open roads, they could easily be tested indoors.

I think they just want to hide the screen, but were afraid they'd damage it, or the coat wouldn't hold, or something like that.

Hiding the screen probably has something to do with information about the supercharging, or the new UI. Even though I don't understand why they can't just turn the screen off.

The photo confirms nothing. It's a picture of a jacket draped over a steering wheel.
