He was already investigating tunnels for the tube thingie -- HyperLoop. So, now he already has bureaucratic infrastructure for tunnels; might as well do all sorts of tunnel types and uses.

Love Elon's ideas and can see why he would want to develop this kind of tech before lifting off to Mars.

Tunnel Boring is one tough gig, you really can't fault the guy on his stomach for a challenge!

Could be of use to Hyperloop and/or road traffic, but underground living on Mars would be useful while you wait decades for the Terraforming to take.

Either that or Elon is sick of the Tony Stark comparisons and wants to be The Underminer.
