i have the 240v dual inverter Model S home charger and I’m buying a 2018 BMW i3s. Does anyone know if it will charge the i3? Or must I spend $1000 for the BMW charger?

Thanks

Mitch

If the BMW uses 1772 then you can get the tesla to 1772 adapter. Or you can buy an aftermarket charger for a lot less than $1000

Please excuse my ignorance but I don't know what a 1772 connector is. I've attached a photo of the BMW i3s charger female receptacle.

This is the J1772 handle and plug:

A company makes an adapter that converts the Tesla HPWC (home charger) to the plug shown above to allow you to use the same unit for both cars. If you don't want to use that adapter, any other home EVSE (home charger) will work with the i3. You do not have to buy the BMW unit. I used a Clipper Creek unit for my i3 that I had.

Looks like you have a J1772 connector on top which you would use to plug into your wall outlet. The bottom is the CCS combo which is used for fast charging at a DC outlet.

You could use the adapter you linked or you could buy a whole new charger for that. search "J1772 EVSE" Seems you can buy a charger for about $250 that way.

So I'd be looking for a Level 2 charger if I wanted to buy a new one rather than use my Tesla HPWC and an adapter?
I assume the direct DC is for a Level 4 charger which no one makes for the garage (yet). I guess BMW has one somewhere or else why would they add that feature?

Correct you want to look for a level 2 charger that would use 240volts. the bottom DC unit you usually find at public charging stations.
