So my California personalized plates have arrived for my Model S - but...

DMV is telling me that:

a) They must be immediately assigned to a registered car.
b) They cannot be transferred to another car until I sell or otherwise dispose of the one that I originally registered them to.


Anybody have any experience with this?

You should be able to trade them. I have done that here in CA.

Yes I DMV traded with different cars and even a trailer. They just want $ for every transaction.

I just went to the DMV with my old plates and turned them in when I picked up my kickg*s plates.

Yep. We installed our Roadster personalized plates onto our Buick Regal GS until the Roadster arrived. "MY TESLA" on a Buick caused a LOT of odd looks from others tailgating the Buick. When the Roadster arrived, we transferred the plate.

Rather than UNICORN there's always:

UN1CORN (using a one)
UNIC0RN (using a zero)
UN1C0RN (using a one and zero)
