Model S Delivery Dates and Sequencing

So, unsolicited email from local Tesla delivery specialist yesterday with my VIN 5761 !!!
With a delivery window of2/23-3/9 I wasn't planning on calling until later next week and starting the normal "pre delivery angst" calls.
Much to our surprise Tesla initiated the process sooner than expected.
Apparently there really is an Easter Bunny

So res # 13767 VIN 5761. Delivery in Portland, OR

I called today and received an update! So here's the timeline now with estimates:

11/7/12: Reservation complete: "RESERVATION SEQUENCE NUMBER: 13,571"
1/25/13: Order complete: "Your Model S order is on its way to the Tesla Factory" (79 days)
3/12/13: Estimated delivery prompt (46 days)
3/19/13: Estimated VIN assigned (7 days)
3/29 to 4/12/13: Delivery window (10-24 days)

156 days (max est.) from reservation to delivery, 54 more days from now until delivery. That's gonna be a long 54 day wait...
Hum....I'm behind on reading posts, so maybe I missed something, but my seq # is 14,480, reserved several days after you. My order was completed on Jan 15, 10 days before yours, but I'm really expecting my vin any day now. And, I am hopeful that I'll take delivery early in my Feb 26-Mar 12 window. What is making you so pessimistic on dates? Did you order red?
Or, maybe I'm just overly optimistic....

60KW is all I see Dennis.

I just called again to confirm. "Mac" said that the dates are what's in the system. The configuration is completely buildable with nothing holding it back. He's double checking and emailing some folks in the factory to make sure. I sure hope they find out that they accidentally pushed the dates by a month. Easy typo to make ;) Maybe I missed the batch of 60's and all they're building right now are 85's.

Dates for 60s have been off a bit from what I remember seeing on this forum. Some 60s with much later delivery window than mine already have their vehicles. what's interesting is that they had earlier seq # and later delivery window. I think Tesla was anticipating later delivery of 60s initially, but was able to delivery ahead of time. It's possible that HansK may get his car before the computer generated dates. will have to see how many 85s tesla needs to catch up before switching to 60s. they also have to add reds and earlier 40s as well as std suspensions.

Yes, I have no way to prove this, but it appears to me that they did a big batch of 60s last month. 85 res holders were beginning to get antsy. Now it looks like they are back to batching 85s, putting 60s on hold for now. It makes sense for them to go after 85s as those have higher revenue (and likely higher profit). I'm worried they did a batch of 60s just to say they did them, and will really try to finish all finalized 85s before they go back to 60s. We saw a 2/4 finalized 85 already get the deliver button (targeted for late Feb-early March delivery). But a 1/25 60 is still estimating a late March - early April delivery.

Called my Delivery Specialist this afternoon and finally have a VIN for the car. I'm one week in to my delivery window and doubt that I'll get the car by the time the window closes, but at last I have a VIN.

Sequence #11,281 - VIN 5284 - 85 kWh, Blue Exterior, Tan Interior, Obeche Wood Matte, 19" Wheels, Tech Package, Sound Package, Pano Roof, Air Suspension, Paint Armor, Twin Chargers

08/17/12 : Reservation
01/07/13 : Pre-MVPA Signed
01/21/13 : Delivery Button
02/05/13 - 02/19/13 : Delivery Window

Got the call this morning and car was delivered to me around 3pm today - 2/17/13.

I posted this in the 60kWh first email forum, but thought it more appropriate for this forum:

For those of you who have been estimating delivery dates far longer than me, what would you estimate mine to be?

P13,571, reserved 11/7, order complete 1/25
60kWh, white, pano, 19", textile, piano black, tech, air, rear facing seats, supercharging

Even though the status in My Tesla says "The Tesla Factory is building your Model S" and my delivery estimate on the docs said Feb/Mar, I'm guessing last week in March or first week in April.

Hi Hans - I think your estimate is dead-on. Another White/60 #13490 received VIN#5097 and got a delivery window from 2/9-2/23 at least a week ago. I assume that they completed their order immediately after receiving their finalize button. I'm #16615 and finalized slightly before you, but I ordered a red, so you'll be getting your Tesla way ahead of me. You should be hearing something from Tesla next week, I think.

i had asked in early January that my car not be delivered until march 1st and was told no problem. i reached out to them a few days into february since my original window was 1/28-2/11. they couldn't tell me anything. after 6 phone calls and atrocious communication to say the least i am now told that my car won't even enter production until the first week of march because they are about to make a substantial run of 60s. the PS wouldn't say anything else due to "insider trading" (a line they continue to use at tesla which as far as i can tell is overused and means we just don't want to tell you or don't know) and couldn't give me a delivery window yet. i told him i would like a firm window and VIN asap.

needless to say, this is a frustrating process.

A firm window, fine. However, do you realize that you don't generally get a vin until shortly before you get the car?

With your original window, they were likely getting ready to produce your car when you e-mailed them. That might push production back an undetermined amount of time since I don't think they would produce your car in mid January and then hold it until March 1st.

Not having the VIN is plenty fine with me - ASAP to me means when they get it. I would however like a window and one that's accurate. If that window is march 15-31 that's ok but they just need to have a window. To continually say "we can't say anything" isn't the best way to handle the situation.

Also, to delay things by 2-4 weeks doesn't and shouldn't mean delayed by 6-8 weeks.

I'm actually surprised to hear that you didn't make the earlier batch...

If you got pushed out of a production run it is feasible that you will lose more than 6 six weeks.

Manufacturing is not a simple planning process like a restaurant reservation.

What is your angst around the delivery date?

Ou have waited this long, what's the hurry? You demanded a push out. They obliged, but now you demand that the push out timeframe meets your expectations. That is frankly not realistic.

In addition, they probably don't run a full planning process every single day, just to accommodate people like you.

Having worked in hi tech manufacturing for 20 years, it is requests like this that can dramatically impact smooth production schedules.

They probably batch these change requests to schedule them, in later windows. The Delivery Specialists don't schedule anything at the factory. That's done by production control. They take the demand plan, compare it with the supply plan and then create a production schedule from there. I bet they love to have at least a 2 week if not one month frozen production schedule. That means NO CHANGES.
Every time there is a change it creates an exception process.

Lets not forget that Tesla is still a start up. It appears that there is a lot of tolerance around flaws with the cars, I think there needs to be a lot more tolerance around manufacturing as well.

It's not as easy as it looks to predict these precise dates as so many demand.

Just got word that my car is at the Tampa Service Center 20min from my house! I fly out to Chicago today, though! D'oh! Back on Friday...hoping to pick up Friday night or Saturday!

jchangyy - when I was doing the tour at the factory i saw a bunch of cars near the indoor test track which were undergoing final inspection. there were 2 silvers/greys with 19" wheels so not sure if one of them was your but i suspect so. Could not get close enough to check vin, but I'm sure if you call your DS today and demand to schedule a delivery date he will say your car is ready.

Just get the financing ASAP so you can get in your car then post pics. When the weather is better (raining tomorrow and Thursday) i will post more pics.

I was wondering where you were. thought you'd never come back to this forum now that you have your car.

Impressively, I got my final MVPA signed and done yesterday (Sunday) and now, my loan stuff is docu-signed today (President's day). I should get my loan check either tomorrow or Wednesday. I tried calling today, but I think many of them are off today. no answer. will try again tomorrow. Hopefully, mine is one of the one's being tested, which means I should have my car ready for pick up by the weekend--just in time for a trip around Half-moon bay.

looking forward to your pics...
