But, this statement is just wrong. The best MPG of a large hybrid, like the MB or other similar heavy luxury sedan, is under 20MPG. Maybe if you are comparing this to a Prius plug-in but this is no Prius. I currently average 20MPG with a MB 550 engine using premium gas .Based upon my average 25,000 miles per year, using premium gas, I have estimated I will spend $850 on electricity for the year rather than approximately $7,000 in gasoline. I think this equates to far more than 50 MPG - more like 90-100.
The calculation for my estimate:
My COE is roughly 17 cents per KwH avg. (I am on a tiered option, since I am home most of the time and don't opt for the TOU option). This translates to $15.30 for fully charging a S90D (90KwH). This will buy about 5 gallons of gas, and assuming a generous 300 miles on a full charge, that's about 60 MPG. Taking into account a more realistic mileage range, fixed electric charges and other not so insignificant adjustments charges on the electric bill, will reduce that MPG number significantly. Opting for the TOU metering won't change the numbers much.
