Model S HPWC to Roadster for charging

I am not sure the Roadster port connectors are even rated for 500V DC. The Model S pins are specifically designed for AC and DC.
The cables leading from the MS port to the battery are also designed to handle AC and DC.
The pins are much larger. The charging unit itself converts from 3-phase AC to DC. There are also filters on board to eliminate harmonics from the conversion
and significantly different isolation/protection circuits from what is present on the Roadster currently.
Supercharging would require a major change to the Roadster charging - software and hardware.

I'm sorry, I did not mean to imply that the Roadster would be able to use the Supercharger. Instead the diagram shows an extra 70 amp circuit option which I'm assuming could be for the Roadster 70 Amp charger. Here is the link to the Supercharger specifications.

The firmware is required for the latest version of this adapter. All the earlier versions contained electronics to overcome this bug. In light of the firmware upgrade, I changed the electronics. Tesla has always updated my firmware whenever there was a new version without my asking them. But ever service center is different and I suggest that you ask to make sure they install it.

Thanks,
Henry

The Columbus Ohio service center upgraded my roadster to the 80 amp firmware. I'm ready for you to announce availability to finalize my order. Happy Holidays Henry you sure put a smile on my face with your new product.

Well, I'm even newer than Kent as I don't have the J1772 CAN adapter yet.
It was on my todo for Spring to order one from you but now reading this thread, I'm wondering which of the two adapters will be most useful.
J1772 or Model S-HPWC converter...
Any thoughts?
My first thought was that over here in Quebec, J1772 will be very useful as the provincial government is pushing for electric cars but 'government plans' don't always come to bear results!!! (not meant to start a government bashing exercise :smile:)

I would think j1772 would be more useful in Canada as a first adapter. You can thank Sun Country Highway for that. :)

Simple answer - Both! - J1772 is handy for 30 Amp, but the Model S adapter gives you a 70 Amp quick charge at any Tesla Stores or Service centers.

It should work. The Model S 1772 adapter is female 1772 to male Model S. The Model S - Roadster CAN is female Model S to male Roadster. The only missing piece might be the locking pin.

I guess this setup works really nicely if you also have a model S car.
Your Model S/J1772 cable adapter can be used for both the Model S and the roadster (with the help of Model S/roadster CAN).
So you only buy one CAN for the roadster and the roadster then may be charged on both Model S and J1772 chargers.

As I don't have a model S, it would still require me to buy two adapters.
It then becomes a choice between these two in series or two dedicated CANs...

If you put the J1772 plug on the Model S UMC, then you can charge any EV with a J1772 (almost all of them), charge the Model S with the supplied adaptor ($95 from Tesla, if you don't have it), and charge the Roadster with the current J1772 to Roadster CAN.

True, but it won't let you charge a Roadster from a Model S HPWC.

Why? I spelled out every step. Please tell me which step you think won't work.

HPWC ---> J1772 plug (replaced Model S plug on HPWC)
J1772 ---> CAN
CAN -----> Roadster

Well to start with, your post referenced the UMC not HPWC.

I agree that would work for the converted HPWC, but not for most HPWCs in the wild. The advantage of the S-Roadster CAN is it easily lets you use someone else's HPWC when traveling.

I looked at the diagrams briefly but didn't see the 70A circuit. Can you tell us where it is and what page of the plans? They often install solar collectors at or near SC locations so I wonder if the 70A circuit might be for that? It would be a bit of a coincidence that it's 70A if for solar. Then again I'm not sure why they couldn't use the same circuit for both.
