Model S in rough neighborhoods

Insurance does not protect your from the effects/injuries of an assault

My bad. I thought we were discussing the OPs concern about possibly having his Tesla stolen. I've never been carjacked, despite having driven desirable cars, and my strategy for handling such an extremely rare event is to simply relinquish my car upon request. No need to have it escalate, since the car is insured.

Perhaps others with more experience with this situation can weigh in, but it's not entirely clear to me that injurious assault is a necessary result of these very rare occurences.

I was worried when I bought a new BMW motorcycle that it would be a target for theft when parked overnight. I added an alarm but as it turned out there was no market for the bike so thieves left it alone. A Model S would be similar as it is easily traced and even if is packed in a container and shipped to another continent, SW updates will still be required and the car early found. Being connected to the internet is a good deterrent to theft, in my opinion.

That only leaves vandalism which insurance will cover.

The one risk that I can see when driving through a gang's territory is to not do it repeatedly at night as it could look like a rival gang is moving in.

I have always kept two cars. A nice car that I drive most of the time, and a super sh1tty truck that I drive to home depot and to rough neighborhoods.

Another thing, my truck costs less than it'll cost you to fix your Model S .. just in case some neo-socialist decides to key your car because he thinks you are rich.

Can't do the two vehicle thing really. I drive about 55 miles a day. Primarily to a good neighborhood where you'd see Tesla's daily but then in the evening to not so nice area's. The point of getting the nice Tesla is for it to help my commute and comfort as I move around the city.

I like your avatar btw....love me some avocados!

Depends on the neighborhood, south you're more likely to get your car window broken into or robbed, west will steal anything they can get from the exterior or key it, Northside you'll have to worry about a Bro puking on it.

LOL - My own neighborhood has been described as such a place. Everyone over 30 walking by has a stick in their hand because of this reputation.
The Model S is parked in the driveway every day for 2 years, and only the squirrels molest it to date (pooping and causing the pine tree to 'bleed' sticky sap onto it when they pick pine cones/nuts).

Meh, that's why there's CQuartz. It's great. Squirrels are a nuisance. Humans have not been an issue. Have some great conversations started though.

White is so popular that it doesn't stand out, imo. Especially if you let it stay somewhat dirty.

Also, I suggest sticking to the base wheels.
I think you have the right idea: let the car get dirty and keep it that way. Won't stand out as much and it will be less of a target because the coat of dirt will make the car look less fancy and upscale.

I've parked in several bad areas in LA day and night. I always worry but nothing has every happened.

People hanging around when I park and get out like to ask about the car. "Is that one of those electric cars?" "Is that made by the iron man dude?" I'm always friendly and stop and chat.

Lol I actually have work in each of those areas.

North is no problem. Pretty a fluent area and will be there the most but only in the day.

West I park in an underground area so the car is secure and theres a main road leading to the expressway. Some characters on it but should be ok.

The south is a new site for me and I'll have to park in an open lot. This site is more exposed to the neighborhood and the route out a bit more sketchy.

Overall I think as long as I'm vigilant and use some common sense like I do anyway just driving a nicer car shouldnt change much.
