Model S in Tasmania

I am surprised.! You clearly had the considerable foresight to appreciate WHAT Model S represents and the courage to go out on a limb and order into fresh air..... plus the serious financial commitment to possess a 'Beast' but you are disturbed about the ferry.? (Yes I am joking)... I can wait to get over there and do a run, document (stills and video) then have a little chat to the ABC.....

The ferries are great, have travelled on one in my Impreza about a decade ago - they are in the progress of updating the ship interior as well - Spirit of Tasmania | Spirit of Tasmania ships to get makeover
- highly recommend it, especially if you are going to be in Tassie for more than a couple of weeks and travelling around a lot!

I'm sure the members of the newly formed AEVA Tasmanian branch would make you welcome! Currently working on getting a lot more plugshare entries added in Tassie to make your trip easier :)

Names blurred for privacy.

The pic is of David Walsh's Model S at MONA. The comment refers to Kirsha - David's wife - who apparently has a Blue Model S on order. Not sure where Emily's intel is from!

Surely MONA has to get a destination charger at some point!

The official launch of the Tasmanian branch of the AEVA is on this weekend!

There will be some EVs on display including at least one Model S.

The people involved in the panel discussion including the Minister for State Growth (which encompasses both energy and transport), Matthew Groom; RACT's GM of Technical Services, Darren Moody; and TasNetworks' CEO Lance Balcombe.

(Probably too far away for most of you to bring your Tesla, unless some Melbourne residents want to make a last minute ferry trip, followed by the 278km drive south! :)

Not that I stay at Hobart hotels myself ;) But MONA (which has eight Pavilions for accommodation - not cheap!) would be able to accommodate use of a HPWC. None of the other hotels mention it as a feature, but as to whether it is technically possible or not ...
it is worth asking about use of 10A plugs
- Wrest Point Casino in particular has a large 2-3 level car park and should have a few 10A plugs around the place.
- Old Woolstore also has their own car park and may have the same.
- Henry Jones Art Hotel uses primarily off-street parking, I think. Will have to check.

Good news - there are 3-4 hotels either in the early stages of construction or recently approved for Hobart. It would be ideal for these hotels to have EV charging spaces set aside from the start.

Outside of Hobart - I might have already mentioned this, but the RACT (equivalent of the RACV/NRMA etc) owns a few accommodation properties - Strahan, Cradle Mountain, and Freycinet. Considering their interest from both motoring and tourism perspectives, I think these would be prime candidates for EV charging.

RACT is a corporate member of the newly launched AEVA Tasmanian branch - I might ask them (as well as a call around other hotels and see what I can find out!)

I was stopped at Campbell Town today and noticed what a perfect location it would be for a small 2-stall Tesla supercharger (such as the temporary one at Euroa).

- 147 km from Devonport - location of the Spirit of Tasmania, the primary entry point for vehicles visiting the state
- 133 km from Hobart - capital city and one of the major destinations
- The largest town on the states' busiest route (Launceston-Hobart)

- There is a large park/playground in the middle of the town - immediately surrounding this:
- Food outlets (none are 24/7, but between them there is something open between 5am - 9pm):
- Cafe (takeaway and eat-in meals)
- Burger store
- Bakery
- Subway (which has its own internal children's play area)
- Other facilities
- A car park with about 50 spots (the ideal location of the supercharger)
- Public toilets
- Heritage Highway Museum

Since Campbell Town is less than 200km from all major population centres (all except the far north-west and the west coast - combined population of about 10k people), this single SC could effectively connect Melbourne to Hobart and allow Tesla to connect another 500k people to their network.

It is also 67km from Launceston, and 68km from Swansea on the east coast, making it an ideal location for fast DC chargers for other EVs with a ~80-100km practical range.

Gudday Chuq,

I still have a plan to do my customer visits sometime in November before Christmas madness kicks in. If anyone does a run around Tasy before then please post data especially on recharge points..

Hi Keiron,

Which parts of Tassie will you be visiting?

If you leave Melbourne with a full charge, and arrive in Devonport on the ferry, you should be able to get to Hobart (279km) without needing to top up.

This week I'm doing a mailout to major hotels across Tassie to find out which are willing to allow EV owners to charge their car overnight (via standard 10A outlet). Hopefully within a couple of weeks I'll have a few locations for you :)

Cool!

Ive contacted the Best Western in Launcetson.

They have an EV spot=10 Amp powerpoint!.- Would do on a trickle charger( I have a portable 10/15Amp and a 22Kw 3 phase portable as well).

Maintenance guy is Philip- Very helpful.

My current sites are: Hobart, Launceston, Burnie, Edith Creek, Derwent Creek, Devonport(Spreyton), New Town, Scotsdale so far in the list.

Great info about the Best Western... it wasn't on my list :) Actually I'm from Launceston and I didn't know which one you meant, it's change names since I lived there!

Wow.. some of those may be a challenge! Edith Creek to Launceston, 244km... Derwent Bridge (I presume you meant) to Hobart .. 174km.. but very hilly and winding road. Not sure if your customer sites have 10A plugs you can connect to, to top up?

Note.. I believe one of the hotels at Cradle Mountain will be getting HPWCs soon...
If you are your own boss so far as your schedule and accommodation choices go, i.e. you can have "free days" in between visits, you should be able to schedule things to suit. If you are on the whim of your employer it may be tougher to explain why you are staying at certain 4-5 star resorts ;)

Over the last week I have emailed about 35 major (or strategically located) Tassie hotels and resorts. I've only had replies from about 1/4 of them so far.

In addition to the comment about the Launceston hotel from Keiron above, there have been positive news from hotels in Hobart, Launceston, Strathgordon, Smithton, Cradle Mountain, Tarraleah, Freycinet and Eaglehawk Neck. Fantastic so far as geographic diversity goes! Not naming individual premises yet, although in some cases there is only one option ;)

Some replied they have power available, some don't now but intend to soon (either 240V or specific EV ones!)
