Model S rally

I had a reply from Tesla. They can't directly sponsor/organise, but are supportive. I'll keep talking to them - in particular about how we might publicise this event to owners.

So, if we're gonna do this, we're on our own. I would suggest we have 2 long-stops (one for lunch, and one for tea/coffee), and use the rally-joining-money to pay for these. We can also have a couple of shorter stops along the way, so that stragglers can catch up and we can socialise.

To do this, I think we need 3 organisers and 10 to 20 participating cars. For the organisers, I suggest:
1] Refreshments/Stops (arranging with the lunch and end hotels for group parking and food rates)
2] Route (confirming the route, and arranging stickers for the cars)
3] Members (liaising with participants over arrangements, organising and keeping track of the cars)

Anyone want to step forward and take up any of those three roles?

My eMail is (well known) as mark (at) webb-johnson (dot) net. As a start, if you can volunteer to help organise (either of the above 3 roles), or want to participate, then please eMail me and let me know (a) name, (b) tmc handle, (c), your mobile phone number, (d) if you have whatsapp, and (e) what you are volunteering for. I'll start to build the list. I'll also start to publicise this wherever I can.

Just wanted to get back to organizing the rally now that I have my car!

I've been thinking about the route -- shall we identify landmarks at the four ends of Hong Kong and hit all of them? So tentatively,

South: Stanley?
West: the Airport
North: Science Park?
East: Sai Kung?

Ultimately, this is similar to the Roadster rally route, but we hit Stanley on the south side, which might be fun. We don't need to go through the Chai Wan reservoir. The promenade could make for some nice shots of our cars, and we could do lunch at one of the promenade-side restaurants (cheaper than a hotel?)

On the East side, I'm a member of the Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club and it's quite a nice drive in. I could look into hosting afternoon tea there, but I'd need to look into the guest parking policy.

To me, the North side seems to be weakest -- the Science Park doesn't seem so interesting.

Mark -- how many people have signed up for the rally thus far?

So far, we've got 8 cars who have indicated that they want to join. I guess that will pick up if we advertise this some more.

Assuming we left early morning from central, lunch in Stanley would be too early. Based on the last time, we'd need something further west (airport, etc). The other issue is parking - Stanley is a pain on Sundays. That is really an issue at any place. For the stops, we either need wide open spaces, or pre-arranged group parking. That said, the last Tesla Link event at Stanley had special parking arrangements for a mini roadster rally we did to there - if we ate there, perhaps something could be arranged. But, I still think airport is better timing-wise.

I like the idea of CWBGCC - a really nice drive out there, and it adds some miles to the trip. Should be some amazing photo opportunities. Ending up there for tea would be good. Perhaps you can ask to see if it would be possible? Estimate about a dozen cars.

If we want a circular route, how about starting at Kai Tak? That is closer to the suggested clearwater bay end point, and a fast top-up charge for those coming from afar. Also quite easy for eastern tunnel then south of the island. Stop around Stanley for a meet-and-greet. Then on to the airport. Then, up west and north to Sai Kung?

This sounds like a plan, the CWBGCC would be a great stop if allowed. I would like to get photos done of all the cars somewhere, to post here. Hopefully my car will come in time and I can keep pace with my active cruise control...

I am surprised there are only 8 cars - I was afraid it would be over-booked quite fast. By December, I am sure there will be lot's more interested in the rally. To the extent it fits into my work and play, I am happy to contribute in the planning and logistics (as noted in PM)

So perhaps a route like this:
Hong Kong, to Clearwater Bay Golf and Country Club Marina - Google Maps

I've put in an enquiry with CWBGCC and will post again when I hear back from them. The receptionist was, of course, not so keen -- towing the official line that although there is no official policy on guest parking, it is strongly advised to keep the number of guest cars to a maximum of 4 per member. I've e-mailed a more senior manager.

I agree with Mark on the timing and parking issues for Stanley. Perhaps we could just circle around on Stanley Main Street, do a few pictures, and then head out to the Airport for lunch?

Is there a Jockey Club member on this forum to ask about the feasibility of stopping by Beas River Country Club?

Thanks. I'll be setting up the whatsapp groups in the next day or two.

Regarding numbers, we've only been able to advertise to a very small group so far. The roadster owners I know of (perhaps 20) plus Hong Kong Model S owners who frequent here. If we can finalise the plans more (exact route, exact stops, exact costs), we can evangelise further and I am sure the numbers will grow. Just not sure if "FS 1" will attend

Interested in joining the rally, will pm you my number

Just a quick update that I’ve just been notified by CWBGCC that the weekend of December 6-7 will not be possible because there will be a tennis tournament at the Club. I’m asking if we can do it the weekend before or after. Will keep you all posted.

Hi all,

So I just heard back from CWBGCC. They're quite amenable to it. They're a bit wary of "commercial usage", but when I reassured them that this was solely an enthusiasts' activity and that we're not promoting Tesla commercially, they don't mind. (Core, you may need to temper your enthusiasm a bit... haha...). I was reminded to stay low-profile with the photo-taking.

I've tentatively told them "around a dozen cars" and they're okay with that. 20 cars seems to be a maximum. It would also be good to stay within 24 people. Going beyond that is possible, but involves "Banqueting", which would mean private rooms and more expensive food etc.

So what do we all think?
