Model S - Window Tinting

Getting our 70D tinted as I'm tying this. Going with Wincos ceramic 20% all the way around and 70% on windshield. Had this done to all our cars in the past 5 years with excellent result. Even the clear 70% blocks more heat than the darkest of non-ceramic film.

Highly recomment TW Tinting in Santa Ana. #1 rated tint shop on yelp ever since I found them 5 years ago.

Any tints in a MC red? Brand/color? My previous car had Llumar air blue 70%, which was great, but had a blueish tinge. That was fine on a dark blue car, not so good I think on a red car. PS I only know of one highly reputed shop around here, and they are Llumar only.

We used Auto Mall Tint Specialist - Professional Window Tinting. In Fremont, California.

They did our Leaf before the Tesla and it's holding up well after 1st year. The P85 was tinted on 5/23 and it is really well done. We are 100% satisfied.
90% back/70% front/no windshield tint

that's my 6 year old at the factory Supercharger. he claimed the car for when he turns 16.

Thanks!

Hey guys, I'd like to say thanks for your input, and all of the experiences related in this thread with PhotoSync (and for the pics!). I went ahead and got it on my F30 BMW and it turned out great! In the end I went with 75 on windshield, 65 on front doors, and the rest 35. If anybody wants to see I can post pics. Impressions:
  • big diff, I can now drive in South FL in what everybody else calls summer (for us, it will get hotter still, but it's already hot hot hot)
  • don't really see any distortion on windshield. saw a bit when I drove it "wet" from the installer but it has since cured more and you have to look hard. it's not at all distracting, I'm not aware of it unless I think about it and start search for distortion, and then I try to decide if there's really something there or I'm imagining it. bottom line, if you get it installed by pros (and Premiere only works with high-end shops, at least for now) you won't have an issue. NOTE: a 3-Series' windshield is a at a very different angle than your MS, and could expose stuff that is simply not visible at the angle in my car.
  • I wear polarized permanent Rx sunglasses and I don't see anything in the windshield except for a slight rainbow effect (people with polarized sunglasses will know what I'm talking about) in the very upper left corner. it's not always there and it varies by the intensity/position/angle of the sun. Thankfully, it's not a place I ever look thru unless I'm trying to spot a plane. But again, because of the different angle (and length) of the windshield in your MS, it may be larger and/or in a different position (or not there at all).
  • I do not notice any tint on windshield when driving during the day/at night (from a darkness perspective)
  • at first I didn't think I felt any difference w/ the windshield (my first at that too), but then when I start thinking about how cool my hands stay on the steering wheel I realize that it works
  • don't have to crank AC to the ridiculous levels I had to before, which would result in me simultaneously freezing and feeling hot, which sucked. Yesterday was partly cloudy and had it at 71 in both front zones (rear is not digitally controlled so just set on coldest). Today full South Florida sun, 68F both front zones kept me comfortable. Don't sweat like I did before.
  • it's very tricky to take good pics of the tint, especially with a crappy camera like an iPhone 6 Plus (if y'all want pics I can show you what I mean). From different angles, when in the sun, it can look very different.
  • 35 is not as dark as I expected, which is a good thing since I didn't want to go very dark. That said, if I wasn't moving from Florida -> Cali, I'd get at least 35 on the front doors too (I would never go darker than 75 on windshield)
  • ...but I'm totally enjoying almost-no-tint-65 at night. I think 55 would be just about perfect but could attract attention in Cali.
  • anywhere else other than the south 65 is more than fine. the heat rejection is still there just wish it would cut out more sun (and my sunglasses are supposedly Coppertone 90% tint). It's fine though, just nitpicking, and nothing I can do since the main intent is to be as close to CA-legal as possible.
  • can def see line between darker rears and light fronts, but not from all angles, and because 35 is not that dark it's not too bad. also, in kinda makes one think there's nothing on the fronts which is a plus.
  • PS35 on rear window is no problem at night. I do come from driving a 30-tinted car and I felt that was no problem either, but with the self-dimming mirror 35 is still fine for when you've got high beams hitting you from the back. No tint was not fine, it was somewhat distracting/disorienting because of light scatter inside the car other than from mirror.
  • asked the tint shop about suction cups, they told me used them to your heart's content after 48 hours, just don't rip them off but use the release tab on the cups when taking them off (which is what I did anyway). actually put my SunPass on immediately after getting tinted before I left the shop (2 smaller suction cups) and then took it off when I got home and no issues!

Ask me anything.

Thanks for the info but a few pics in the sunlight would be great. I'm picking up tmrw and going to get a tint scheduled soon as it's now over 100f daily. I don't prefer a dark tint and don't care about privacy however I want the the max cooling so will go low if I need to. In NV, I can go as low as 35 but not sure If I want that dark.

So what kind of prices is everyone paying for their tinting? I think I will like to go 50front / 35rear and trunk, and it sounds like ceramic is the best for keeping the heat away...but some of these applications sound pretty expensive.

And by small chance if anyone has had tinting done anywhere in Norther VA or in Maryland with perfect results, please let me know!

It will vary by area and installer very much. As a datapoint, I paid $300 for my Llumar Ceramic tint.

We paid a little over $300 for ceramic all around. Add another ~$200 if you want windshield done.

I got several different quotes from local tint shops, and some wanted as high as $1K because they claim their film is made out of unobtanium that can block all alpha gamma rays from the farthest of universe. Guess where we took our business to?

I replied to you last night and included some pics but I guess the mods aren't happy with pics of a non-Tesla, even though this is about tint. Anyway, hoping this gets thru to get you my feedback.

After about 10 days of daily driving:
  • PS65 inadequate for driving in South Florida. I got PS65 on front windows because I'm moving to California, but I still get burn on the side of my face when driving south at 9:30 AM. Not as bad as untinted but bad enough that I'm not happy.
  • If I could do it again, I would do PS55 or PS45 on the front windows at greater risk of getting a fix it ticket in California.
  • If I were staying in FLA, I would get PS35 on fronts without hesitation
  • PS35 is not that dark (again, I wish I could show you), absolutely not a concern driving at night. I confirm that my self-dimming mirror still works.
  • PS75 on windshield doesn't seem to do anything _while driving_. I know it's supposed to reject heat and all and probably if you leave the car outside in the sun it's a little cooler when you get in. The car in question is always garaged so never parked in the sun except when I'm running errands, and _while_ I'm driving I can't tell a difference, nothing significant that I can clearly say it's not placebo effect. Now, for an electric car, it may be important even if you can't feel it since you have finite energy; in a gasser it's not a great deal IMHO, although we'll probably put it on another car which does spend most of its time parked outside in the sun.
  • 10 year old FormulaOne tint in 30 performs way better than PS65 from a face-not-burning perspective. I'm sure the heat rejection numbers are not the same but in the end it's about how it feels.
  • I would recommend you go as dark as you can stand it. I am not a fan of dark dark tint (i.e. the "limo tint" look). I think that look starts to be noticeable at 20 or below, and PS35 is nowhere near that look. If you absolutely don't want dark at all, at least go for PS45. I've been to NV and driven thru the desert in August and would not think twice about not getting PS35 if it's legal.
  • A good installer will go thru all the options with you, show you the different films, put it against your window. Make sure you ask them to do so outside in the sun, and get inside the car and see what it looks like thru the film. I'm pretty sure you'll find PS35 to be almost too light, but it'll allow you to make up your mind based on how it looks to you on your car.
Hope this helps, lmk if I can answer any other questions. I can send you pics thru IM if the post with them doesn't get approved

P.S. Mods, please let me know, I don't mind if you won't approve it, I'm thankful for the info I got here either way.

For those who tint the front windshield, how is it? Any glare, lost of visibility driving, any halo effects?

i read some recommend using photo sync tint for best heat block. I also read some really good reviews with 3M Cystillite. I found a place that does all 3M by Ontario Mills, any recommendation on nearby places with photo sync?

Don't get any glare, no lost visibility and no halo effects. No distortion looking straight, looking to the side I can sometimes notice some distortion (like someone's wheel gets slightly warped as we move past eachother). I wear polarized sunglasses and I only notice a rainbow effect high and to the left (I have to look there to see it) and not in all lighting conditions. At night I wear clear Rx glasses and no issues, no reduction in visibility or anything. Note: my car's windshield is at a different angle than MS, I'm curious to see if the two minor issues I'm experiencing are alleviated or aggravated.

Don't notice anything through the tinted windshield in terms of distortion or rainbows by itself.

BUT when I wear my polarized sunglasses and look out the windshield, I now notice notice purples/blues coming off most other car's windshields. Occasional rainbow every now and then. Nothing bothersome at all. Kind of cool too. I didn't have this effect when wearing the same sunglasses and the windshield was not tinted.

I've got Llumar AirBlue 80 on my windshield. I have noticed any change with my polarized glasses. I had a loaner earlier this week and vision (from the windshield) had no noticeable difference between my car and the loaner. On the sides and back, zero distortion or rainbowing, but I do notice the darker difference between the two cars since I have a 40% tint there.

I guess I am going go with 3m crystalline 40s all around and maybe decide front. Sad the 3m crystilline 40 is the darkes...from Thier info that about 38% visibility. Would prefer 30/35 visibility to be a bit darker. But these other brand like lumbar don't have the nice heat protection 3M does
