Model X Falcon Wing Door Alignment

Hey Gang,

I picked up my new Model X on Monday and I'm obsessing over this. Is this normal? The delivery specialist didn't know - new guy - and they all seemed pretty overwhelmed. I asked them to note it and haven't heard back yet.

Googling around other model X pictures, I certainly don't see a misalignment like this though..

Mine's been like that since I took delivery in December 2017. The pictures online are one thing, Reality is another. You want to keep an eye out for scuffing in the door jamb though. My doors have had to be adjusted a few times with not much success. They landed up putting film there to prevent the paint from being eroded.

Is ur paint scratching inside ? Is door not locking ? ...If none of above don’t waste ur time having SC make worse ..there are a few stories circulating here

This was a rather large purchase for me, and when I walk out to my car, the first thing I see is that non-perfect, broken arc. My eyes are drawn towards it. Perhaps years of therapy can help but if the argument against getting it fixed is that they cannot do it right, that worries me a bit more than the broken arc, for sure.

mine looks same as yours .,,door works perfect ..but yah it’s not a simple fix that is cookie cutter that any shop can just copy instructions ..a lot of times they make worse

Here are mine. I was told this was normal.
Like was mentioned earlier, if there's no paint scratching, leave it alone. That looks like about par for the course. They'll most likely make it worse before making it better, if they can actually make it better

The chrome trim pulling out of the fwd channel towards the rear of the car is normal?

@OP your photos are pretty similar to mine. like you, my eyes are drawn to the broken lines from the poor alignment and fitment. but really, it's only when you are up close. from greater than 10ft distance, it looks ok. i did have the SC take a shot at correcting most of them (a lot of mine were at different "angles" too, which made it even worse), but what happened was in the process of aligning the trim, now the doors (metal frame) don't really look lined up. so it's really a toss up. i declined to have any further work done on the "brightwork" for now, because i think if i have to choose the lesser of two evils, the more important thing, visually, is that the chrome trim (esp the door handles) are lined up. and for the most part, my chrome trim and handles look decent now.

unfortunately, the other members are correct in that when you take it into the SC for work, you really don't know if it'll come out any better, and in some cases, it may come out worse. plus, they dirty the white seats and may scuff up other things in the process. i decided after 2 visits that i'm done and won't be revisiting the alignment and fitment issues anymore and will just try to enjoy the car for the short remaining time i have on the lease (6/2020).

interesting to note - ever since getting the car 2 months ago, i have been looking at every single Model X that crosses my path on the road or in parking lots (and there are a lot of them around here). i have noticed that on white cars, the alignment issues are particularly pronounced. and it doesn't surprise me that all the photos above are from white cars!

also, pretty much 99% of Model X's on the road have some sort of alignment problem, and i saw one black one that was truly awful, i'm talking about a good 1/3" difference in height in the trim and handles. and it was less than 3 months old based on the sequential license plate #. that made me feel a lot better about how ours looks, but i get how you feel and wish Tesla could figure out how to get the alignment right after so many cars.

@Brave Ulysses those pictures seem pretty fixable to me based on my experience, esp the driver side. it looks like it's drooping too much and needs to be moved up to sit on the same line with the rear quarter window.

but... the tricky thing on the passenger side is that the chrome trim is already "aligned" with the rear window so if you move up the sagging trim, it's very likely the "line" will not appear straight anymore. this is the trade off i had to make, and i chose to keep the line in tact vs the trim being perfectly seated.

it's a crappy tradeoff to have to make, and each owner has his/her own preference for what's more important!

I took delivery of white MX in December of 2017. Doors were misaligned about 3/16" - enough so that people admiring car frequently wouldn't say anything, but I'd catch them running their fingers across the misaligned gaps.

A trip to the SC removed almost all the misalignment. We, too, were constrained by the fact that door handles *were* aligned, or I think they could have cured things 100%.

My best guess is that the QC on the door manufacture, not the assembly process, is at fault here.
