@Sparktz @Kurt'sX in your garage do you connect your Model X via a valid WiFi connection? If yes, how strong is the signal? If not, in your garage do you get an AT&T LTE signal, how strong (# of bars). If not, in your garage do you get AT&T 4G if so, how strong (# of bars). If you get no AT&T data connection have you considered going to your service center to get the update. If they, or you, don't have time for a service appointment, it is my understanding if you park as close as you can to the Service Center then allow your Model X to make a WiFi connection it will download any available update. I have a strong WiFi signal as I have a repeater in my garage but I know others who do not have connection in their garage use their Service Center's network. If I had to rely on the AT&T Data network I would never get an update as I live on an Island and I am lucky if I even have one bar.

The connection to my WiFi in the garage is 2/3 bars. My Model S (the Model X is the wife's) sits in the garage parking spot that is further away from the WiFi and has no issues with any software updates.

I emailed Tesla service and they stated:

Tesla Vehicle Support Specialist said:
Thank you so much for reaching out to Tesla Vehicle Support.

It does look like your vehicle has been trying to update to the next firmware – however it does not have a good connection to the wifi. Can you tell me if you are properly connected to your home wifi at night? I can have our technicians try and push the update over the air to your vehicle – however we’ll want to make sure the connection is strong first.

As for the automatic headlights – this has not yet been released to our Autopilot 2.0 Hardware.

Later that night (1/2/2017) the software update came through on the X (including automatic headlights though the Vehicle Support Specialist thought that update wasn't out yet for some reason). I am guessing that they pushed it to the car manually and it took it. I got a call from my local service center today about the issue but wasn't able to take the call.

Here's a video I recorded on Christmas...with two cameras instead of just one (should have used my smartphone as a third camera given that it can shoot 4K...so I could have done a lot more digital zooming at 1080p). I also should have left the lights off in the garage since the background looks much nicer when it is illuminated solely by the red tail lights.

OMG this is awesome! Thank you for all that info, wk057. I will try all that tomorrow. I wonder if I have a problem because I'm also having a problem with my new iPhone 7+ with Cricket Wireless SIM that seems to 'hold on' to the Bluetooth until I double thumbwheel reset (which is entirely another problem I've yet to address and Tesla could not figure out (tho I wasn't able to loan them my phone to reproduce)

The easter egg seems to just trigger code in other modules in the car to do their part with proper timings. Audio is handled by the CID (MCU), and if it's bogged down by anything that could lag it enough to delay audio starting after engaging the rest of the modules then it will not be in sync since the process doesn't seem to be synchronized in any way besides start time.

So, my suggested steps to those experiencing sync or other issues with the show:
  • Ensure your car is on firmware 2.50.114 or higher. Any lower versions will not work at all or not work correctly.
  • Park in an open area with nothing overhead, and nothing around the car that can be picked up by any of the ultrasonic sensors.
  • Reboot the 17" screen with the scroll wheels and give it a few minutes to get everything back together and start fresh.
  • Stop any music that is playing. If using bluetooth audio, set the media player to something else then stop to make sure it doesn't auto play something from your other device.
  • Set your apps on the 17" screen to ones that use basically no CPU, like the energy window and calendar and turn off HVAC. Even if you have one low-intensity all full screen, I've noticed that the car doesn't actually unload the previous half-screen app in all instances.
  • Close all doors except the driver door.
  • Input the modelxmas code.
  • After the window pops up on the screen, crank the volume if desired. Do not dismiss the popup.
  • Exit the car.
  • Manually close the driver door (physically push it closed, not with the fob or handle).
  • Walk away from the car so as to be fully out of range of the ultrasonics.
  • Single tap the top center of the key fob.
  • Enjoy the show.

I've done the show probably 30 times now, mostly without issue. It is pretty picky about things that are picked up by the ultrasonics and abruptly stops if something is too close. Had someone approach the car to get a close video and it cancelled the show.

Good luck!

Im still waiting - No update as of Jan 5th......I unfortunately park in a 5th level subterranean garage with no WiFi connect....I have to rely on signal whenever Im out on the street, but have not issues in the past. I would get a text reminder, pull onto street level and get my updates.
So I guess I need to pop over to the SC and have a chat!! Don't they know who I am?? LOL

I am curious if/when the Easter Egg is removed from a future FW update. I'm currently running 2.50.114 and have a clock icon showing. I'm reluctant to update if the Egg has been removed. Still have people I've promised to show it to. Hopefully as TMC members DL future versions they can let us know if they still include it.

Thanks.

v8.0(2.52.36) still has it.

Ran it in ski lodge parking lot B4 Epic powder day, following a GIANT storm in California. Note the wall of snow behind the car

Yes, mine crashes now and then, windows roll down, starts to play, doors start to open and then it stops. I have found that if I turn the car completely off and then restart it again, it has a higher chance of running. I have emailed support a few times but no response. However this last Tuesday, National Night Out Day, we had a block party in my street and I was able to successfully run it three times. It absolutely cracked people up, they had no idea that it did this.

I also played a practical joke. I had the '58 chevy out with the top down and the MX in the driveway, and of course, all of the guys, wanted to see the engine of the chevy, a 283 4-barrel, so I opened up the hood to oogle the spacious engine compartment, then I asked if they wanted to see the front of the Tesla, they all did. So I popped open the Frunk... and... there is nothing there! Ha ha!~

@mbp11 thanks for the tip!

Actually we had to run it many times - two times at the different, very crowded parking lot we had anticipated to do this, but that parking was really full and wind was too strong (6000ft+ elevation) we failed to dance. We then decided to move down a little bit and found this nice, wide parking lot.

The failed cars always fail or stopped in the middle. So I think some cars can run (including mine) dance show every time, and some cars have issues starting the show.

I and another member in Pleasanton seem to have intermittent problems running the holiday show since last year with failure rates up to 100% in some cases whenever we try. Since last year we have been comparing notes and we understood that if the car is on too much of an incline or if there are overhangs or curbs too close, the car will not behave. Does not seem to matter with the height of suspension or whether we start with the windows down or up. However we seem to a similar problem, one of the FWDs will always detect a false obstruction and error out with an announcement on the central screen. The door will go up about 2-3 inches then beep and stop. The opposite side will stop rising sympathetically but always a little higher than the trouble door. My car seems to have almost all of its failures on the driver’s side, rarely on the passenger side.

My friend had mobile service come out after examining logs and replace the door sensor. I have not been so lucky and have had service visits where the cabling was loose and was resecured, then the door sensors were replaced, then the pinch sensors replaced, then the driver’s side front door actuator replaced and after 4 visits, the holiday show works for a while and then starts to fail again.

We have done some of our own troubleshooting and initially we thought the GPS awareness of the FWD height might have something to do with it. So before we begin a show, we stop and calibrate the FWD height at our desired location (sit in the back seat and hold the FWD up button until the doors beep and resentfuly rise to the full height, or from the drivers seat, hold the up button in the central screen until the doors beep and rise to their full height). This seems to help sometimes.

We have tried doing a double scroll wheel reset and even turning the car off (Service menu) and then back on again before a performance. Does not seem to help.

What helped me for a while (which I read about in these forums about fixing serious software issues when nothing else seems to help) was a forced hard reset (and I suspect, clearing out of memory buffers) by changing the diameters of the tires, resetting the car, and then changing them back to the correct diameters. I had a fair amount of success that way, getting the holiday show to run in my front driveway when it would not run before. But sooner or later, our remedies have failed.

So back to the service center again for the 5th time! This is war! I am on first-name basis with all of the techs and greeters, I bring them candy and I am trying to keep the goodwill going. The SC has tested the car and now replaced the FWD latch, but the problems persist. So I got the bad news Sunday- the car is going back to engineering. Hope to have it back by the end of the week. If this fails then I am going to have to give up, it cannot be fixed in some cars. The neighborhood kids will be sorely disappointed.

So I am documenting this and keeping you informed of what works and what did not as a service to the Model X community. Stay tuned!
