Creating a new thread because I just got the excise tax bill from Cambridge for my fully loaded except for Ludicrous P90D Model X, and have had no responses to my posts on the Model S excise tax discussion thread.

Tax date: 3/30/16 (delivery date)
Taxable value: $129,800
Tax: $2704.17

Wow - I paid $1146 on my 2013 S85 in summer of 2013. This seems high - could be MSRP of the P90D Model X. It would be nice to know if others are getting billed similar amounts, or if there is a way to challenge this to get the Model X base price or 90D base price as the tax base.

Thanks in advance.

When I lived in MA (and just confirmed via the google) the excise tax was 25$/1000$ of car value. Car value in the first year is 90% of manf list price. By taxable value above do you mean manf list price or 90% of that value. Depending on your answer I see 2 scenarios:

Manf list price = 129,800
Tax = 129,800 * 90% * 25$/1000 = 2920.5

Manf list price = 144,222 (129,800/90%)
Tax = 144,222 * 90% * 25$/1000 = 3245

Regardless of your answer you seem to be getting charged less than you should be. Why not just take a trip to the cambridge town hall to ask them to explain it? Of course this could cause your bill to increase a minimum of 200$ as I've shown above.

Thanks. True except for two things:

1) the tax should be prorated 75% based on the date the car was put into service, one quarter into the year. For your examples that is $2190 or $2434.

2) when I got my Model S, they treated the P version (and possibly the upgraded 85kWh battery) as options, with excise tax calculated on the base price. Not clear what they're doing here.

Does anyone else have a Model X excise bill, or a 2016 Model S one, for comparison before I go to City Hall?

Thanks.

I just redid the calculation, because the proration is only for entire months in which the car is not registered. So I'm getting charged the following:

Manuf list price = $144,222 (129,800/90%)
Full year tax = 144,222 * 90% * $25/1000 = $3245
Prorated tax = $3245 * 10/12 (exempting Jan and Feb) = $2704.17

But where do they get that $144,222 list price? Isn't that a fully loaded Signature? My sticker price without destination charges was $135,250. The "Standard Vehicle Price" on my sticker is $80,000. A base P90D price without options is $115,500.

Time to gather documentation and file a change request.

Anyone else out there?

Agree something seems amiss if you didnt pay the 144,222. Let us know what happens. Good luck
