Model X Owner Transfer

I know this is a long shot but we recently purchased a model X in Santa Monica and we were hoping the previous owner could transfer ownership so that we could set the car up to our Tesla account .

@WKNDSuperHero I thought that adding a car to your Tesla account is initiated by the buyer, by selecting Add Car and providing the purchase paperwork. I’ve never actually done this, but would be interested to know what if any action is needed by the previous owner.

Just purchased a preowned X, you go to the Tesla website, log into your account, add the vehicle by the VIN and upload your temporary registration. Follow the steps Tesla will email you and then in a few days the vehicle will be added to your account

If you know the buyer then they can do the transfer for you and it would be done instantly. If you don’t know the buyer then you have to go through the steps I mentioned above and will be in your account in a few days

So the real question is, did you purchase from Tesla or third-party? Tesla should have the vehicle released from the system and you should be able to setup the app within a couple days, assuming they didn't make a paperwork mistake or get behind. For third party, you should ask for the prior owner to transfer to you (using the Tesla app), or ask the dealership to ask them. Of course, this might be harder to do. As jz788 says, there are longer ways, but these two are the fastest.

I got it resolved today and got a notification this morning to setup the car in my app.
