I don't think any of the DS know what they are talking about. it seems that person's statement contradicts itself:

Like if you keep everything as is: i.e. you paid 3000 for the original AP, do you get the enhanced AP at no additional cost? I don't understand the DS response. Please let us know what his or her response?
Seems pretty clear to me. He's getting the new AP2.0 hardware which can't run AP1.0 software so features will be limited to same set as those who ordered AP2.0 (no lane keeping, etc.) until the new software arrives. At that point sounds like he will have the all the AP1.0 features enabled with an option to activate additional AP2.0 features (auto lane change without user prompt, etc.) and full self-driving features for an upcharge. Why anyone would pay for the latter before regulations allow it is a mystery to me.

I think folks rather roll the cost into the monthly payment rather than lump sum.
Without knowing when the regs catch up to tech these monthly payments are wasted... plus you can just put that portion of the payment into a savings acct, then buy the option outright, when regs are finalized. Still don't see any reason to layout money for self driving option now. Enhanced Autopilot is a different ballgame. That one can be used now so it's worth it.

My 60D is also scheduled for a late November / early December delivery. I emailed my delivery specialist asking how this affects my X.

Here was his reply:

These are your options:

· You can upgrade to Enhanced Auto-Pilot for an additional $2000* or opt for full autonomy** for an additional $5000.*
or
· You are welcome to keep your current configuration, but please keep in mind that since your Model X will be produced with the new Auto-Pilot hardware some of the standard Auto-Pilot features (auto-emergency braking, side collision warning, lane holding) will not be available until the new hardware completes validation sometime later this year.

*Pricing is pre-delivery; post-delivery upgrade will include $1000 surcharge
**The full autonomous capability option will be made available pending further validation and regulatory approval.

I am a bit confused about the auto-pilot options. What is the difference between the $3000 AP I purchased and the new $5000 Enhanced Auto-Pilot?

I don't see the $3000 AP as an option anymore. Is Tesla going to "dumb down" auto-pilot for us people who purchased prior to this announcement if we do not pay the extra $2k? Seems like a lot of work for very few cars.

I am still waiting on a response....

It's right on the website. The Full Autonomy package doubles the amount of cameras you have and gives you the ability to have the car drive on local roads and such instead of Autopilot+ which is a super advanced version of what we currently have-- not full end to end autonomy but a hybrid so to speak.

I got a response from my DS highlighting the differences between my original $3k AP 1.0 and the $5k Enhanced AP. Still seems odd that they will support AP 1.0 functionality on the new hardware for us few who ordered between mid-Sept and mid-Oct if we elect not pay the $2k upgrade fee.

Do you all think the $2k is worth it?

I agree with @Stasla that it seems silly to pay the $3k for the self-driving right now without knowing when the software and the regulations will catch up. The possible benefit could be locking in that price since Tesla has a tendency to increase their option prices on a regular basis. (AP has gone from $2500 to $3000 to $5000 in less than a month.)

Here is my official DS response:

Totally understandable, it has taken me years of intense fast paced learning to get up to speed with our equally rapid pace of innovation. Essentially, the Enhanced Autopilot will boast a more robust sensor and camera suite that will enable it to automatically change lanes without driver input, transition from one freeway to another, and exit the freeway based on destination info when utilizing navigation. The new hardware will also be capable of supporting full autonomy (<- the additional “Full Self-Driving Capability” option for $3000 online).

Keep in mind that we continue to support a diverse fleet of Model S/X with little issue. We support vehicles with no Autopilot at all, with 1st generation Autopilot, and we will now support vehicles with Enhanced Autopilot and full self-driving capability. I think the key thing to keep in mind is that even if you decide to continue with your configuration as is, the experience will be consistent with your original expectations and will continue to improve, regardless of which route you choose. What’s more, since your Model X will be equipped with all the new hardware, you always have the option to upgrade at a later time once the awesomeness of the new features reaches the “too hard to pass up” level.

That is very well put. I hope that all Tesla personnel communicate that important message just as clearly as that employee has.

It seems like your DS missed the "Autosteer+" and "Smart Summon" features that are also parts of Enhanced AP.

Except as I read it, the AP 1.0 features won't work for months after you get the car (I have no faith it will work in December). Am I reading things right?

That's what I understand as well and I am fine with it since I am picking mine up in early Dec anyway. I think the 1.0 features should have no problem coming in December but the 2.0 features may take some more time.

Agreed, it becomes a software problem to bifurcate the features into 2 buckets: AP1.0 and AP2.0 and enable them remotely depending on what the customer paid for. If the software that uses the new hardware was fully baked - they would do this from day 1, but because they have to rewrite it using the new hardware which all new cars will have - they can't enable all AP1.0 features if that's all you paid for, until the software is ready. Only those features that are ready to work with the new hardware will be available until then, which means some of the things that AP1 cars can do won't be ready on AP2 cars until later. So basically they are disclaiming that until need software is rolled out, you will have the same limitations as those that paid for AP2.0. After that you will only get AP1.0 features, even though you have new hardware.

Just received a response from my DS. I will have the new AP 2.0 hardware on my X60D, but there is a software upgrade cost $2k for Enhanced Autopilot and another $3k for Full Self Driving capabilities. She did however suggest I wait for more information for HQ before I make a decision to pay for any upgrades.

My DS let me know I too am getting the AP 2.0 hardware, because of factory re-tooling they said I'd get it end of Nov. I paid $2,500 for Auto pilot so I assume I am getting Enhanced Autopilot since that's all that would be available to give me on the new AP 2.0 hardware, will see when I get it.

Nope you will get AP2 hardware with AP1 features unless you pay the difference to upgrade to EAP.

So without paying $2,500 more (since I only paid $2,500 for autopilot) they'd turn off smart Summon, smart lane change and freeway interchange? Guess I'll see how it plays out before paying more for those features...

Yep, as well as only using 1 of the 8 cameras and turning off Autosteer+, "self-park when near a parking spot", and "On-ramp to Off-ramp".
