Model X Sentry Mode

Hi All - Does anyone have any good recommendations for a USB for sentry mode?

Could I just buy an external hard drive instead? Here is one I am looking for. Would I be required to format it? Or does the software format it automatically?

I think most would recommend an SSD over a hard drive. We use the SAMSUNG T5 Portable SSD 1TB in multiple cars.

You can now format the drive (and create the required subfolder) directly in the car before using it.

I use the above mentioned Samsung-T5-Portable-SSD without power source. Haven't had an issue.

I don't think this is true. I am using a 256 gb high speed USB drive and it works fine. Got mine at Costco.

Did you format it in the car or on your computer? We use the Samsung T5 SSD in 5 different Teslas without any issues.

@Mj23lebron6, what year model X do you have? My Samsung T5 SSD stopped working on my MCU1 MX after one of the updates last year. It resumed working when I got the MCU2 upgrade.

I would think the Samsung SSD would be better as there are very, very many owners already using it. The T7, which I’m assuming would work as well as the older T5 that I’m using, is currently slightly cheaper at $80.

You are probably right but it's too late because I bought it anyways. Will report back how it works. Ended up being $81 before tax. These drives can also get really hot so not sure on that. Either way will be a sweet thumb drive.

im using a micro sd card with adaptor, seems to work fine
