Model X windshield sun glare

When I had the privilege earlier this week of driving a Model X in full sun, I noticed that the visor could be configured at just the right angle so as to block the sun very nicely when it was at an otherwise awkward position in the sky - and the windshield. That the visor was in its folded-up thin mode meant that it was obstructing overall vision in a negligible fashion. I can best describe it as being the vehicular equivalent of placing one's hand and arm in front of one's sun-blinded view. But a lot more effective and less tiring. If this explanation is not clear, perhaps Roamer can offer his own attempt at a description, as he was in the car with me.

Glad the visor was sufficient, however it seems that sig owners have a mix opinion on the need for sunshades. If Tesla makes the sunshade available I believe that will solve the problem so those who feel they need one can purchase it.

How is sun exposure in the 2nd row?

The sun visor is no help at all if the sun is coming at you through the windshield on the passenger side.

On the live chat, Pierre & Sarah told me a sunshade would be available soon but Giovani had no information. (I asked multiple times) I also emailed Tesla but no response.

But if Elon said a sunshade would be available I am pretty confident it will be.

Really? He also promised Model S Sigs lighted vanity mirrors too. ;-)

Even if Tesla doesn't make them, If it is a real problem for people, I'm sure some entrepreneurial soul will make them available in aftermarket.

Personally, I'm interested in a shade cover for the insulating quality. Has anyone noticed with a moon roof on a cold day/night how much COLD drops down from the moon roof? Slide the cover over and it's much more comfortable. I would expect the same problem with the Model X, has no one with an X noticed this? Is the windshield really that well insulated?

Exactly. What Elon promises and what he delivers are not always the same thing. Back in October, he said every Model X would come with sunshades. That has proven to be false, and indeed, almost no one inside Tesla seems to know about this promise, let alone working n making it a reality.

I really hopes he fulfills the promise with the sunshade. I wouldn't have ordered the X if a sunshade wasn't going to be available.

But he deleted his 2nd respond to my Tweet. This is the current tweet which states: "yes, comes with each car" but he deleted his follow up message (attached) shortly after tweeting it: "the shade isn't really needed, but we provide one like that anyway"

But if he changed his mind about the sunshade why didn't he delete his initial response?

I think the first tweet was referring to the factory tint as a sun shade. Then he realized you meant an add on shade. At least that's how I read it. Elon thinks the tint in the glass is the shade. But for those that don't agree they will offer an add on shade.

Here is a ten dollar solution.

Itwas interesting when we discovered you could rotate the shade over your head and cover any area where the sun needed to be shaded.

I ordered this simple shade to keep my wife happy until Tesla offers a shade screen.

Why did he bother responding to the tweet (which he later deleted) acknowledging it is similar to the sunshade on the Model S.

Lol we can probably write a book that analyzes the different interpretations of Elon's tweets.

I base my interpretation of the comments he made on early model S experience. Elon had the position that the Pano tint was all that was need for shade. Then one day shades started popping up in the online shop. Front, middle and finally back. We put in shades in three Arizona S cars during the summer and take them out in the winter. My wife leaves hers in year round. Some people swear by them others find them completly unneeded. Everyone has different needs.

i ceramic tinted our first S Pano and did not do anything to the next two panos. When I drive the cars I can't tell any difference at all.

One of the problems with Tesla's design is we get a lot of features Elon Musk wants and a lot of things that many people might want are left out because he doesn't think they are necessary. I see that pattern in a lot of the complaints about interiors: lack of storage, no hand grab handles on the inside roof, the pano roof with no way to close it off, etc.

In many ways Tesla has gone way beyond any car out there. Both the Model S and X turn the triad of utility, efficiency, and performance on their head. I don't think there has ever been any other cars that would score as high on all three at the same time. All the competition trade off one or two for the others. The 17 inch center console is also an advancement in car design. Whenever I see a newer car with a screen my first thought is how dinky and limited the screen is compared to Tesla. I drive a car that's almost 24 years old, so I'm not used to many of the creature comforts in modern cars, my car didn't even come with a DVD player. But while the storage in my car is less than the average newer car, it's much more than available in a Model S/X.

I'm not one of those who want to see the creature comforts usually only seen in $100K BMWs or Mercedes. That's way over the top for my tastes. I'd be happy with the sort of storage pockets available on a $30K Subaru Outback.

My first thought when I saw the front windshield on the Model X was a) aesthetically bad IMO, and b) that's going to be a real pain in the afternoon. I'm not really all that interested in the top of the car being open to the sky. I'm fine with a roof over my head. One thing I thought of today when someone mentioned something in this thread is that sometimes when the sun is coming in the front windshield from the right angle, I can block it by putting down the passenger visor, but with the visor on the X way over on the front pillar, the driver can't reach the passenger visor. IMO that front windshield is one of the few cases where Tesla let their styling trump their engineering. They sacrificed too much for that windshield. If I was thinking about an X, I would be happy to pay less for a normal front windshield. It would be a much cheaper part than that huge slab of glass they have now.

The following question is based on a real desire for understanding - it is not snarky in any fashion whatsoever so I do hope no one will take it that way.

Preamble: I never have owned a convertible automobile - just boats, snowmobiles, 4-wheelers and other obvious open-to-the-sky craft.

Q: For those of you who do or have owned a convertible, how many times when the weather otherwise cooperates have you closed the top in order to keep the sun from bothering your eyes? Is sun glare a significant or negligible concern for you when you consider opening or keeping closed the top?

It is not a concern when I am driving my 911. The visor works to cover the sun when I would be driving towards it. As I do not have much hair left, I normally wear a ball cap when the top is down.

Did anyone get a response from Tesla regarding the availability of a sunshade? On the live chat I was told it should be released before I take delivery.

Yes, Tesla replied to me in an email about 2 weeks ago (1/6/2016) saying they had never heard of such a thing, but to keep an eye out on the Tesla store for accessories:

We now understand that you were referring to a sunshade for your extended windshield.

Unfortunately, we personally have no information regarding the sunshades for the Model X.

I will update your note submitted to service, who will have information if available.

Thank you,
