Family of 4 with an 18 month old, 4.5 year old, and hope for more kids down the road. Currently, one of us drives a 2019 minivan (60K mileage) with the kids to daycare and work - commutes 15 miles daily. The other drives a 2013 commuter (165K mileage) to drive 170 miles daily. With the tax credits next year, we wont qualify for the tax credit next year but Tesla is offering a $7500 break if you take possession by end of year so we are feeling some pressure to buy and secured a 5 seat Model Y. However, knowing we want to expand our family, we were looking at the 5 vs 7 seater for extra seats. Should we proceed with the 5 seater or wait until our commuter dies and get the car we need at that time (knowing we wont get any tax credit or other credit)?

There is no right answer to this question.
If your 2013 communter is Honda or Lexus, it probably will not die soon if you make regularly required maintenance. If this is how you normally change cars, buying a new one when the previous one dies. Then probably you don't need to rush and drive another 2-3 years for sure, and by that time a lot will be changed in the EV market.

If you just like Tesla and want an EV, ready to switch to EV trading in one of your commuters - then 7-seater probably would be a better option in your case.

And if you say that you will not be qualified for tax credit, it looks like your family is pretty wealthy and this discount should not be a really big deal to rush with decision if that's the main trigger to do so
