Model Y Delivery - My Full List of Build Issues - How Serious Are These?

Hi everyone,

I just took delivery of a Model Y yesterday - it's my first Tesla and I am very pleased by it.

I'm not a car expert, but I've diligently tracked all the potential build issues I spotted - see below.

I wanted to ask car experts on here which of these (if any) are serious issues, so I can be aware of them. It seems like Tesla is still racing to get the cars out the door - I saw tape from the factory in multiple places on both the exterior and interior, which was very surprising for me.

Paint Streak
There is a bright red streak on the paint on the drivers side - between the door and taillight. It looks like a racing stripe, and appears to have been caused by an issue in the first coat of paint.

Plastic Wrap Indicator
There is plastic wrap stuck in the driver’s side rear door. Is this indicative of incomplete work in the undercarriage?

Partially Painted Section
There is a small unpainted / partially painted section on the top of the passenger side hatchback, with corrosion beginning to take place.

Loose Trim
Drivers side window trim is loose

Frunk Issue
Front trunk has a gap / misalignment

Taillight Alignment
Driver’s side taillight alignment issue

Headliner Gap & Factory Tape Present
There is a gap between the headliner and roof window - on both sides but particularly noticeable on passenger side. It looks like the adhesive glue here isn’t sticking. In addition there is still a black tape label on the passenger side from the factory - could you please investigate if this was intended to note an issue?

Well, that's disappointing. I have been reading way too many posts like this. It is bad enough that the factory puts them together like this, or the QC lets it out the door, but then the SC actually presents it to you.

My experience, back in '17, with my MS, was very satisfactory and I have been thinking of upgrading to an MS LR, but these constant revelations of poor build quality have put a hitch in my step.

Of course, you will enjoy the car, but I suspect you are in for some inconvenience to rectify these issues.

Same issues with mine. I picked my car up 3/28 and it still is not resolved. Seats, misaligned panels, rear deck lid and paint on the rear bumper.

After hearing numerous similar build quality issues with the MY I postponed delivery of mine a few months. If the QC doesn't Improve I'll be looking for alternatives and let Tesla keep my $100. Teslas are not cheap or entry-level cars, even the M3 and MY, the lack of QC is inexcusable. I'd also like to see at least the beige interior option on the MY that is offered on the MX and MS, plus some alternative to the black rims.

Congrats on your move to electric. I have a Signature Model X and a M3. The X was perfect and the person who inspected it did a fine job. The 3 was flagged the day of delivery ,by there person inspecting it, as having a paint issue. It never left the delivery point, I live in Fremont. I should have asked for a new vin number but waited until it was repaired. Delivery day was one of those in person at your home deliveries. The person delivering knew nothing about cars. One could spot the repair and it was awful so rejected the car. I was on the phone with the delivery person in Texas immediately and got the next build with the configurations and color. Glad I did. Turn it in if you can. Someone wasn't doing their job inspecting it.

I would not accept the car with those paint issues. Those would bother me every time I looked at the car.

I am sorry to hear your experience, reading about all these issues, I decided to postpone taking possession of the car on 6/30 . Not sure when i will get it now , may be in late Sept when the quarter end rush deliveries begin. I did not need the car immediately since we are practically still under Covid restrictions, so decided to wait it out for a few more weeks and not go through this mental anxiety .. hopefully things will stabilize in a few weeks.

Wow, that paint issue on what looks like driver side front quarter panel would be enough for me to walk away. Unless that picture does not match what it looks like in person, that's a show stopper. At least take it to a body shop and ask for a quote and while doing that talk them up and ask for their thoughts on the condition of the car. I would not trust Tesla reps to will give you the best advice. Not that they are shady or anything, they just have a tendency to talk down customer concerns (especially true of the phone support reps in my experience). Paint issues are something you need to act on. IMHO Tesla paint doesn't compare with what you get from other car manufacturers.

A lot of the other stuff looks like sloppy workmanship and could be fixed with a good detailing. I would also suggest spraying down the car with a hose for 20-30 minutes and make sure those gaps aren't hiding more serious issue water penetration issues.

I got my car before the factory shut down and I’m grateful. I don’t think I would have taken delivery. The weld in the brake pedal seems to be normal as I have that too. They have a fix for the back seat but that “racing stripe” is going to a tough fix. My dad paints cars and they are not going to do it right, which includes blasting the paint off, resanding and repainting. The fix will likely result in swirls in the paint.

I had a delivery last week (6/23) - after the quick inspection I discovered a couple of issues with paint, misaligned panels, scratched internal parts. I rejected to accept the car as is and asked to either fix the issues or provide a new car. On the weekend I got a call from dealer saying that paint issues were resolved - it's really true, yesterday I came back to the dealer, inspected the same car and they were managed to resolve the majority of the issues. I accepted the car with two issues - scratched internal panel and taillight with a promise that it will be fixed as soon as they receive these parts. I suggest to push back / reject delivery if you dislike the defects - it's only one way to improve the quality of Tesla products.

well the good news is Sandy Munro says this is the first Tesla he recommends, so that says something as far as engineering goes. As far as build quality, that's the concern since it seems like they're just trying to crank out as many Ys as they can to please Elon and the shareholders.

Who cares what sandy Munro thinks. He’s not a sage. Plus he’s probably on the Tesla payroll in some way as he was far too saccharine toward a car which is clearly garbage.

The construction is shoddy for sure. Tesla defenders will say the vast majority of Ys are defect-free. I think the incidence of poor workmanship and just plain sloppiness is far too common for modern day new car sales.

I've pointed out in other posts that a 16k Chevy Spark shows better QA than the MY. I don't think anyone can deny that Tesla is pumping out the Y to meet shareholders' expectations, and with Musk receiving a 75 million dollar bonus recently I'd venture to guess that stock performance must be tied to his bonus goals. But I'm just guessing...

I'm not anxious to give 60+k dollars to Tesla with the lack of QA given the current crop of MYs. I don't think this should be a partnership where the owner has to point out OBVIOUS defects so Tesla can then address the flaws that should have NEVER been presented to the buyer in the first place. I'll keep my 100 dollar spot in line and wait until I'm more comfortable knowing I'm not an early stage Beta Tester for Tesla.

I took delivery of a Model S long range in February, everything I thought was perfect, but a few weeks later I received a service schedule to take the car back to the service centre, when questioning why I was told “ There is serious paint damage under the front bumper, which will need replacing”. On further inspection it was maybe 2 inches long as though it had been caught unloading the vehicle, it polished out without needing to replace the bumper, although your issues are much much worse and I would definitely reject the car as it is not up to a merchantable standard, I can’t understand how it passed the pre delivery check, here in the U.K. it would not have passed, good luck

Mine came with very little to bitch about the car is amazing it handles great and I can't get over the self driving ability not to mention the throttle response.
