Model Y Fail

Went to take delivery of my Model Y SR 7 Seater. After waiting for them to bring it out I was informed that the car won't charge and is in need of a complete battery replacement. My local delivery center handled this with empathy and we could tell they felt bad. They don't know when a new pack would be available and delivered. Since I can't purchase the SR anymore I have two choices wait for an unknown amount of time for a new pack and hope this isn't a precursor to a future lemon, or purchase a discounted demo long range that is similar but missing the tow hitch and is significantly more expensive. I am glad our delivery center was transparent and pleased at how well this situation was handled. It isn't their fault the SR was pulled and they definitely can't control the availability of batteries (Apparently this is very rare). They sent me home in a demo performance Model Y and that put a smile on my face. We already have a long-range Model X and the SR Model Y was replacing a Model 3 SR+ as our second city commute vehicle that we could fit our 4 kids 5 and under in for short drives or when one of us is gone. That makes it hard to justify the additional price for the long range Model Y. All things considereded I am fortunate to live in a city with an amazing delivery/service center. My wife and I felt like they genuinely cared. We will see what tomorrow brings.

Did you say “WTF Fam?” when they told you the news? Sorry, I had to get that out of the way and I enjoy a bit of levity.

Okay, if I were you, I’d wait it out if you don’t want to pay the extra price for a more expensive version of the car you’ve ordered. I know you’re in a bit of a pickle but it is something you’ve worked towards, don’t settle or feel forced to take on something more expensive. I would tell them fix the battery issue and we’ll take it from there.

I hope it works for you.

It sounds like you've already taken delivery.
I would have just rejected the car, it doesn't seem worth your time.
No I haven’t the sales manager “undelivered” it. It’s not that the young adult In me doesn’t want the long range, because I definitely do and can technically afford it. But the responsible “dad” in me knows we don’t “need” the long range. I actually purchased the long range demo today when it was listed, before this all went down and had both vehicles in my account. My wife and I were debating which one to actually take delivery on. With the help of a sensible delivery specialist, he reminded me that I didn’t “need” the long range so I cancelled that one and stuck with my order (incredible that instead of trying to just sell the expensive one he actually wanted to sell the one that suited our needs). Also I am not a fan of the new center console which the SR had but that isn’t a deal breaker.

Make sure they've searched all around for a SR that might be in inventory or a demo at other stores that might be closer to the price... they probably have, but just to be sure they didn't check just the store(s) in your area. It might be worth a trip of a couple hundred miles if you can get the model you actually need and/or save a few thousand bucks...

Edit: Dang, didn't catch that it was a seven seater, that'll be a really hard find.

Yes, they looked. What is odd to me is that they didn't suggest just having it fixed. It was as if it couldn't be fixed. I took it as getting a battery pack would be difficult or that they aren't readily available (My wife and I were also worried that this might be a precursor to a problematic vehicle). Otherwise, you would think they would of just let me have a loaner and fixed the SR. Actually, the way it was put to me was I could "Wait for another one with the same configuration to come in, or buy a long range". I replied "Considering you can't purchase the SR anymore it seemed unlikely another one would come in" to which he agreed. To think I was so proud of myself for timing the sale of my Model 3 and the delivery of this Model Y. I only had to rideshare for two days (I don't like ridesharing during a pandemic). So I was definitely bummed and they could see that. One reason I was on the fence more with the Model Y SR vs LR, was with the kids getting older and starting school / extracurricular activities. The range might become an issue. I am also trying to tell myself that because "grandpa Biden" gave us a hefty stimulus, putting it down on an LR would be "stimulating" the economy. I don't know I am just rolling with it for now and waiting for an update today. The cherry on top is getting this loaner performance Model Y and not a single break in the rain to really test it off the line.

I think the main issue is that this is a 7 seat SR which from what I've seen on these forums appears to be a bit of a unicorn.

It sounds very unlikely that you would find another 7 seat SR or that one would somehow appear nearby. What is the likelyhood of them pulling the battery from a 5 seat inventory SR to make yours whole, or maybe they can do a software locked LR battery pack?

They must have some sort of plan for dealing with a battery failure on an SR a year from now if it becomes necessary to do a battery swap on someones car (I would guess this would be software locked battery). Maybe they can just implement that?

Not to get your hopes up, but as I understand it, a software locked battery may have some other benefits too (being able to charge to 100%, faster supercharging, etc).

I'm also curious what you ended up doing WTFam... I saw two show up in inventory last night, but quickly sold out. There might be a chance something shows up today as well... but ya, these things are super super rare.
I ended up buying a demo LR 7 seater at a discount. I was on the fence between the two and now that I have it I am glad I did. Not because of the range but because of the performance. I had a Model 3 SR+ prior to this and the Model Y LR feels similar in acceleration. The Model Y SR acceleration would have been less than the Model 3 SR+ because of the size and weight which would I wouldn't have been happy with.

How much was the discount on the demo? Was it additional to the usual $1/mile? We are in a similar situation with a SR Y that was supposed to be delivered last week but hasn’t been transported from back east yet. If the demo was only discounted standard we can’t stretch the extra $7k to make the LR work. If it was an additional $3-4k then we might be able to make that work. This is factoring in the $2k delivery fee.

It was $1 a mile ($2100) total, but I was able to get store credit on top of it and the tow hitch installation waved because my ordered Model Y had a tow hitch which the demo did not. That's a roughly $900 value on top of the $2100.
